    Soooooooo...
    I need a new modular PSU as I hate cables and my current PSU has run out of SATA power with just 2 ports (yes, its old).

    Looking for about 500W as I really dont need any more with an E6300, 8800GT, 3HDD's and 1 DVD drive.
    Also needs to be as quiet as possible.

    Are Corsair still the brand to buy or does anyone know of any better branded PSU's that I should look at?

    Cheers

    I won't lie. I tend to gravitate to Corsairs most of the time. You can't go wrong with the 520HX. It's affordable, modular, and you cant beat the 5-year warranty (although I personally tend to mod the PSU's anyways, so this is irrelevant in my case, lol).

    Good luck!

    Yea HX450 is out soon.

    I did a review of the Seagate 500W not so long ago - that was good.

    The be quiet! 650W is excellent, but quite expensive.

    I've got to get some more 500-650W modular psus in tbh. Everyone wants to send me 1kw :(

    The better Corsairs are made by Seasonic so you can still cut out the middleman. ;)

    scan has the 420HX in stock...but the 520HX is cheaper which is strange
    check out the 500W Seasonic M12II-500, seems fair at 66quid

    There's a Seasonic M12ii-430W modular that seems to have a better set of connectors than is usual at the low-wattage end.
    • 1 x 4pin ATX 12V
    • 6 x 4pin Molex
    • 2 x 6pin PCI-E Power
    • 1 x 8pin CPU +12V
    • 2 x FDD Power
    • 6 x SATA Power
    But for a quid more there's the Seasonic M12ii-500W which I'm waiting to see on offer
    • 1 x 4pin ATX 12V
    • 8 x 4pin Molex
    • 1 x 6+2pin PCI-E Power
    • 1 x 6pin PCI-E Power
    • 1 x 8pin CPU +12V
    • 2 x FDD Power
    • 6 x SATA Power
    And both are around £10 less than the Corsairs. And the 520W Corsair HX has less SATA.
    • 1 x 4+4pin CPU +12V
    • 10 x 4pin Molex
    • 2 x 6+2pin PCI-E Power
    • 1 x 6pin Workstation
    • 2 x FDD Power
    • 4 x SATA Power

    as i understand it the corsairs are basically a modular version of the S12 series
    seasonic's own modular version of the S12 is the M12 but has a 60mm fan in it too, making it noisier than either the S12 or hte Corsairs (also more expensive)

    so as far as noise goes, S12 == corsair > M12
    if you want modular and lowest noise the corsair is the best choice, but you can save a few quid if you dont need modular and get the S12

    edit: oh nevermind, theres and M12II without the 60mm :p
    although it only goes upto 500w and the corsairs do 600 and 1kw
    the M12II is only about a fiver less than the corsair though

    Not quite to any.

    The Seasonic-built Corsairs do not share a design with any other power supply. They are not rebranded seasonic units, they are not resold under another label, and they are not a modification of a design. They are built by seasonic, for corsair. That is the only similarity.

    Tagan is hit and miss. Miss more often. Average build quality with lower quality parts, dubious designs, they're not really a good buy.
    Ultra ranges from trash to okay. I'd just skip over them, but if you can find one of their good units for a good price, they won't do you wrong. Make sure you look over which it is before buying though. They make some very similar units that are very different.

    Tagan?

    I'm so glad someone called the BZ because it's utter utter shite. I tried testing one and couldn't really get it right because it's 6 rail and we only have a four rail tester. The build quality is atrocious but because we got an early sample from Nvidia because it's ESA, I didn't know if the final production ones were the same.

    The Ultra X3s are all right but after having used one for a year in my system the fan got dust in it and went a bit noisier. Im using the CM Silent Pro 700W and it's excellent.

    Seasonic built Corsair units use Seasonic hardware and components, but it's a Corsair modified design. Just like the HX1000W is a largely modified CWT ~1000W.

    WTF?

    Not the BZ I assure you. Some of the cheaper/lower spec'd ones are OK though but things have come a long way in a year (plus I know a LOT more now sorry).

    I'm sure you recommended me a 650w dual engine in one of these threads. nvm it works fine and its not exactly under a great deal of stress with my old a64 system

    But one has to ask where the design expertise comes from. In the PC world there are many re-badged products that don't have an exact match in the actual producer's range. Nexus fan? Modified Yate Loon. Antec case? Chenming tbh.

    Corsair range and maker, for info:
    CX400 = Seasonic

    VX450 = Seasonic
    VX550 = CWT (Channel Well Technology)

    TX650 = Seasonic
    TX750 = CWT

    HX450 = Seasonic
    HX520 = Seasonic
    HX620 = Seasonic
    HX1000 = CWT
