Hey I just brought a new PSU today because the old one stopped working. My pc starts and goes to a black screen with "start windows normally etc." any option I choose will result in my pc restarting itself.

    specs:
    80gb hdd
    amd x3 cpu
    8400gs gpu
    4gb ram
    New psu - 300w

    Any ideas?

Do you have any bootable discs that you can use? In fact, try booting up the Windows install disc...if that works, something might be wrong with your install, and you'll want to repair (either through the repair option on the disc, or using System Restore.

I do get a sudden blue flash screen before the pc restarts itself. So install windows again?

Try and see if you can get into safe mode first (by keep pressing F8 after the computer boot up, and then from the option select Safe Mode...with or without Network is up to you). If you can't even get into Safe Mode, then you might need to reinstall Windows...but see if you can repair or system restore like lamboman suggest before that.

Perhaps the disk, perhaps the DVD drive.

Do you have another copy of XP you can try?

Sounds like your dvd drive is playing up.

Do you have another copy of XP you can try? (this will help rule out the disc as the problem)

    try using the repair option

(dont partition anything unless you want to format (lose your data) and install again!

Ive had similar issues myself, with random different messages coming up during a windows installation

They have been because of a dodgy DVD drive each time.

Have you got a different XP disc that you can try? (just to rule out a problematic disc?)

How old is your HDD?? As if you tried to format it and it crashed could be some big issues. Motherboard could hav issues as could the RAM... Either way I wouldn't trust that PSU for S/&T!!!!

I don't have any other XP discs. The cdrom drive & HDD are old but still in 100% working condition. It's the disc i'm sure, which is actually a copy of xp that worked for me the first time. I don't have enough money to buy another, so unless someone knows where I can get a os for free, i'm screwed basically.

You can download another copy of xp and mount it on a DVD.

As long as you have a legit XP key of your own there should be nothing wrong with that.

Get a can of compressed air and give the DVD drive a blast as it could just be a little dusty :)

Could it be the power supply not supplying enough power for the rig?

It may not be supplying enough power for the HDDs as I'm reading an unknown brand psu and its only 300w which is not exactly massive, and we all know unbranded psu's reputation.
