Just looking at the Q9400S that uses lower power and I am going with the assumption that these new chips will overclock really well. But I cant find any testing to back that up. I have a q6600 but its the older B3 stepping and I can only really get it up to 3.0ghz before heat becomes an issue. Has anyone seen any overclocking done on these new chips? they cost a bit more and I dont want to shell out the extra money if they dont actually overclock as well as I think they are going to. Thanks
i was reading somewhere that these chips are only being released to system builders, they aren't going to sell them retail. hopefully that's not true, a 65W quad in a mini-itx would be a pretty sweet cool&quiet system.
Even if they're not better overclockers, I see no real reason why they should be worse. At worst, you'll end up with a cooler chip.
bugger: from anandtech http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3505 Oh well. Maybe i'll get an e8400 and overclock the crap out of it. I'm not too concerned about heat. I just want a bit more performance without going to the i7's. If these dont overclock more than the older version (which costs less) than I dont see a point in spending the extra money to buy one. (unless you are someone who is concerned about heat)
They also seem to be more expensive than a I7 920, in the UK. A Q9550 should run cooler, than your B3 Q6600. Not being funny, but what type of cooler are you using? http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase24.4&prodID=1688939
thermaltake maxorb. Its not a bad cooler, but it just doesn't have much pressure on the cpu due to the way it mounts.
getting a better cooler may be next on my list. I just bought a hard drive and router so it wont be for a while now. Using an antec 900 case.
Your chassis and cooler should allow decent overclocking, damm overclocking lottery. Out of curiosity, what voltage does your CPU need to reach 3GHz?
Cant remember. I'm not home right now to check. I'm sure the problem is the cooler. Its so loose that I can move it by hand. there just isn't any pressure on the cpu. I've mounted it on there several times trying to get it tighter but it just wont go any more. maybe i'll play with it some more when I get home. if I break it, it will give me an excuse to buy a better one.
Maybe Intel are just getting better at optimising profit on a range? Buying chips that are dead easy to overclock to the level of the more expensive ones can't be good for the seller. I've been running a £45 2GHz CPU at 2.9GHz without it breaking into sweat for over a year now, it's made more money for Scythe than for Intel and at that speed it's hard to justify an upgrade.
I dont know if I have the stock cooler. I know that I have the fan, as I saw that the other day as I was going through a box. I think I threw the heatsink in the garbage though.
OP, try using some rubber washers to add some space to where the cooler bolts to the motherboard, one or two thin ones stacked together should add enough space to increase the pressure.
TRUE unfortunately is dead, new breed of CPU's is taking over http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=808&p=2 Prolimatech Megahalems is the way to go, seconded by the Coolermaster V8. Alternatively if you have a insane amount of money then the V10. On a budget the Sunbean Core-Contact Freezer looks sweet but I've not been able to locate it. I so want the Prolimatech Megahalems I'll prob even import it from Germany! Is the Q6600 at 3ghz underperforming? If i were you I'd stick withit until in a position to upgrade to X58 or P55 platform
there is that. I have been waiting for prices to come down but with the cdn dollar being so far below the american dollar at current. Prices are just as high as ever. Maybe in another year or two. I was really hoping that these new quads would overclock farther. oh well.
