I got my new computer parts today, and have assembled them all. And now I have been sitting for like 8 hours straight trying to get the os in :geek:. I bought an xp upgrade, so I have to install win98SE first in order to install xp (xp setup won't run from DOS).
So the first time I just took an old win98SE ghost I made once, installed it, and started installing some drivers befor I ran partition magic to get an xp partition. After running PM, I couldn't get windows to start again, so I had to reformat. After that I have just been sitting, trying to figure something out and using a couple of ghosts, but now when I use a ghost, it won't even start windows (can't remember the exact error message, but it ends with "you have to restart you computer").
So I figured I should try with the win98SE CD. But when I start running the setup there, I get this error message: "SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module KERNL386.EXE at 0001:2B74". So now I have no idea what to do. Can you suggest anything? Please also explain exactly what to do in FDISK first etc. Thanks!

Ok first of all WinXP upgrade doesn't need Win98 installed before hand. All you need is the Win98 CD. Your WinXP CD should be bootable so why not run the setup directly off the CD. As you install it should ask you to put in the Win98 CD so that it can copy some files from it. If you still get errors during install try low level formatting the disk as it might have got errors from ghosting and using Partition Magic. (Actually best to run a diagnostic tool on it first). But anyway try the normal WinXP setp first as it doesn't surprise me that Win98 install is giving you errors.

I didn't read this before I was finished... (around 4 am this morning). So I installed both win98 (setup finally worked) and winXP. But at least it works.
I have a new question, though. What file system do you recommend on the XP disk?

NTFS defiantly. WinXP even lets you change it somehow. Look in the help.
