Hi! I registered recently but I've been reading bit-tech forums for quite a while as a guest. It's sad to begin with a help request but i hope you'll forgive me. My rig specs: Intel C2D E6600 XFX nforce 680i mobo 4GB Corsair XMS2 PC6400 Seasonic S12-600 PSU EVGA geforce 8800GTS 320MB Thermalteke Soprano case Seagate 500GB ST3500841A I address this especially to those familliar with the XFX motherboard. After I switch my PSU on the blue led and orange led are lit on the motherboard. When I use the power switch (or the power button on the motherboard) the green led lits too and the system starts for like 2 seconds (all the fans start running) and then it switches off. Single beep can be heard and the POST code on the led display is 08, than the system turns off. Later only blue stby led is lit on the motherboard. I guess it`s not the motherboard`s fault (when I tried same setup with ASUS P5N32-E SLI the same thing occured), it must be some other component that causes the intstant shutdown. As I don`t have means to check it on my own atm I ask for your help. Any suggestions? What I managed to rule out: 1. Not the power switch (when I use the power button on the motherboard same thing happens) 2. Seems that it's not the PSU fault (checked the PSU with other system, but without 8pin power connector or 6 pin pci-e connector) Thanks for all the input as atm I , Luke
I don't know the 680i POST codes off by heart so I'm firing ideas off at random here First of all, do a CMOS reset. With new hardware, the default settings for the CPU, RAM and video card may not be suitable for what you have installed. This applies to any motherboard. Once resetted, try booting up. If that fails, you might want to dig up what that error code represents. The one short beep usually indicates POST is successful but if it is a long beep, it would be a memory fault (I believe the XFX 680i uses an Award BIOS). You might also want to strip your motherboard to its core basic, leaving just the CPU, one RAM module and video card installed. Unplug everything else but do leave the keyboard and monitor plugged in. Ensure you have the video card plugged in with its power source. Try booting. If it works, then plugging each component in and booting each time will help you find the component at fault. If it fails, you will need to plug in the core components one after another to rule out any faults within them, starting from CPU, RAM then video card.
Surely the best way is to look up the error code that the mobo gives you? After all, someone's implemented some crazy technology to make the mobo realise what's wrong with itself. Seems daft to just ignore it... :\
But there are a lot of codes that are 'reserved' or come up wrong when the board is shorting to the case ('cause it aint working right).
Thanks for all the tips guys. I've taken following steps: 1: Taken the motherboard out of the case 2: reseted COMS 3: tried to run it with basic config: CPU, 1 stick of RAM, GPU; later i tried it without GPU too The problem persists. I would gladly refer to the POST code displayed on the led display... but I can't find any description of POST codes for this mobo. User guide does not contain the info, nor does the XFX website. I submitted help desk ticket at XFX support centre, maybe they will be able to help me. Conclusion is simple: it's either CPU or PSU Anyway thanks for your input. It's quite frustrating as it's new rig, it cost me quite a lot of cash and all I have atm is room full of awesome components that just lie around. It will surely make me understand my computer better tho.
