I recently purchased a "Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB DDR" ... however im having problems with it, my computer keeps rebooting when running certain games e.g Max Payne 2 ... and some games quit to the desktop e.g Call Of Duty. Was just wondering if anyone had any ideas for how to sort this out as im a bit dissapointed at the moment with this card :waah:

MY Current Setup (Hardware and Software):
    Hardware:
    AMD XP 2100+ CPU
    Abit AN7 Motherboard
    512MB DDR PC2700 Crucial RAM
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB Graphics Card
    2 x Maxtor HD's, 20GB + 60GB
    Enermax 350W Power Supply

    Software:
Windows XP Pro + SP1 and all Hot Fixes
Latest Omega Drivers (i also tested latest ati.com drivers and still the same errors)
    Latest Motherboard Drivers

any help would be really really appreciated, thank you for your time!. H3x

all i can think of is conflicts with old drives? is it ANY 3D app? or just opengl/direct3d specifically?? got all mobo drivers up to date?

Ive got the same card, used every driver from 3.5-4.1s with it and never had a problem. Mebbe u need a new one? can u try it in another system?

i used drivercleaner to get rid of all old nvidia drivers etc, well the wierd thing is the following apps/games run fine:
    3dmark 2001 SE
    Command and Conquer Generals
Grand Theft Auto Vice City (some graphics corruptions tho)

i aint updated my BIOS yet ... might do that soon but could that be why my computer is restarting n crashing in games? i didnt think it would be

Im sure the graphics card aint borked ... my old geforce 4 ti 4200 128MB DDR was tho, dodgy gainward with borked RAM :(. Thanks for your help "Bindibadgi", anyone else got any other ideas ?, thank you!. H3x

Is the cooling fan on the card running? I have the same card and the colling fan keeps cutting out and you don't notice at desktop only when you've got games running.

    Hey

I think the best thing to do would be to narrow down or eliminate as many causes to your problem. Firstly i would try using the 9800pro in another computer. If it works, its definetly not a prob with that. I would also try another more powerful psu, 350watt is fine but the 9800pro's do require a fair amount of juice :naughty: Im asuming your new to ati, so i would also check youve connected the molex connector to the card, so many people froget to and totally overlook the problem :sigh:

If all else fails on the hardware side of things have a look at this. Its one of the best guides to uninstalling old gfx drivers and installing new ones :thumb:

Another thing would be to get a temperature probe in there. Your card could be getting very toasty without effective case cooling.

Thats just a small list of things i can think of right now. Try narrowing down teh possabilities as best you can, i hopeyou will find out the problem sooner rather than later.

    Keep us updated hex!

Just to throw my two cents in.... I have an ATI 9800pro, and when playing Call of Duty, my comp would lock up sometimes or give me an error message and kick me back to the desktop. A little bit of searching found that ATI already new about this problem and said I had to have the very newest drivers. So I installed their most recent drivers and haven't had a problem since.

i you don't plug in the molex it won't boot full stop.so it ain't that.back up everything then format and do a fresh install.i had the same problem and a fresh install worked wonders.

Erm drivercleaner doesnt remove all the bits of the dets i dont think... Something like detonator destroyer would be a much better bet as it removes reg entries as well... Still might be an idea to give windows a re-format :D

    Radeon 9800 Pro......Problems

Well, I have searched a lot of forums and the rebooting problem is a common one.

A fix which WORKS for me and all the other Radeon 9800 Pro users is to 'TURN OFF' Fast Write in the SMARTGART properties...which is in the advanced section of the Display properties. Fast Write disabled will NOT make any difference to the speeds fo your graphics card, according to ATi.
So far Ive had no problems.

Another thing is your PSU...needs to be at least 400 watts.

And the Radeon 9800 Pro does need some cooling......I have ordered a Zalman VGA cooler and fan for the Radeon 9800 Pro.

You WILL need some sort of fan blowing over the sink to cool that m8.. the Zalman alone wont be enough..... Had to use an 80mm to cool my 4200@ 4600, so you'll need at LEAST a low cfm 80mm.....

I'm having exactly the same problems as this, with the very same card. I've got a thread here http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=57511 where i've quoted the error messages that came up.

I thought it might be my cpu temperature as its above what i expected and i'm coverering that in this thread here http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=57520.

If you find a solution to this it'd be great because at this rate the brand new gaming machine is only able to play mp3's and i could of had one of those machines for the price of the card :hehe:
