Well hello there. As the title dictates, I'm planing a new case project and now I've come to the point where I have to recognize my noobnes in watercooling. My main goal is try to create something similar like case n project shown at allthemods.com. Why? Because I think it would be a great challenge to try create something similar looking and when I first saw that case some years ago my thought was "wow, I want to have something like that on my desk!" The cooling solution used in case n would be quite hard to use with my setup so I thought this would also be perfect excuse to invest in watercooling! My purpose is to use watercooling to cool CPU, because there will be about 4-6cm space between motherboard and PSU and because I did not find any efective and silent aircooling solution. So enough for nonsense and to the question: My purpose is to use watercooling to cool CPU, because there will be about 4-6cm space between motherboard and PSU and because I did not find any efective and silent aircooling solution. Since picture can tell more than a thousand words I made some quick representation on Sketchup: To explain little, cold air would be pulled from outside and underneath the case. And that white box is 35mm thick radiator So the problem is will my GPU be ok if the radiator that cools cpu is situated under the GPU? What about the sound? Will my GPU produce more sound (i.e. will the fan spin faster) if two 120mm fans push air to it through radiator? My current setup is Intel i5 2500k (not overclocked) and EVGA GTX570 Superclocked. Max TDP for 2500k is 95w so the heatload will be less than 100w for the 120.2 radiator and acording to this test the out coming air should not be much hotter than the ambient room temperature. So if you have any ideas I would gladly hear them!
Really? I understood as long as there is some airflow mosfet should be just fine, and 140mm PSU fan should do just that. And if it is not enough my plan B is to fit small 80mm or 60mm fan above ram to blow some air between the psu and motherboard.
Before I go to bed I post couple pictures to give better idea what I'm planing. That 80mm fan is there if PSU fan is not enough to make airflow for mosfet. And don't pay too much attention for the appearance yet, I'm still pondering it. Let me know what you think, and also if someone would comment the radiator placement I would really appreciate it.
yes 'some' airflow, but more than it'll get there. the gfx will be majorly restricting airflow past it, meaning your motherboard and psu will get very hot. why not try a smaller psu? 850w is total overkill for what you have in there. http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=253
850w is indeed overkill there but I would much rather use parts that I already own and I have a TX850 PSU at the moment. I have already replaced it's fan so warranty is gone, and I'm planing to mod wires of this unit also to fit better in a small case. And what about that small extra fan? won't it work then?
Probably a slight improvement. It will work, just don't count on it working very long. what about a layout like this?
I'll take a closer look at your proposition when I get home from work. One idea was also to try fit some slim schyte or yate loon fan at front so it would blow some cold air in the case. And I'm also planing to hook up the psu fan to fan controller or motherboard connector. That way I could run the fan faster than it would normaly run and thus it would create greater airflow for mosfets.
Ha ha that's ok man, I wouldn't post these plans if I couldn't take constructive examination I made some new sketches: Pump will be mounted with a bracket which is fixed to the roof and front panels. And that manly coloured pink box is 12mm thick scythe fan. And if someone notices yes, there is no hard drives yet. Reason for this is I'm going to use small laptop drives for this one. Plan is to have one SSD and one or two norman 2,5 HDD drives. Oh, and front panel is still only in my head, and those rounded corners may also change. I'm just not sure do I like them or not.
The laptop HDD's is a pretty good idea. to me the case looks like it should be horizontal as opposed to a tower with the top window facing forwards with those rounded corners
ah thats a better view. a lot more room than i thought. Shouldn't be a problem with overheating, especially with that fan at the front. should be a tidy little build, will have to look out for it in project logs
Well my current case (see Discovery in my sig) wasn't big either and I have non modular Corsair TX850 in it. Wire management was a challenge. Since I have already voided the warranty of my TX850 I might as well mod it's wires and make them to fit this case perfectly. My plan is to remove all other but those I need, and those are ATX and EPS, two for my GPU, one sata wire for HDDs and one or two regular molex for pump and fans. So that makes 6-7 wires and most of them are thin and thus quite easy to route. Oh and dimensions are 30cm deep (without any front panel), roughly 37cm high and 18cm wide, but efective space for components is about 16cm wide.
Yes will have to cut the wires to exact lengths to save any space! Just had a look at the other project. It is nice. Have you finalised that yet?
Yea it is completed. My original plan was to make window to it but after some consideration I liked solid side panel more. What I could do is to ad some leds and make better power button but other than that it's ready. Only thing that was a failure was hard drive holder since it resonates with rest of the case quite badly. This is something I hope fixing in the new project. oh and this is what it looks like now: http://allthemods.com/userinfo.php?userid=613&id=8079 Sadly I didn't manage to get any aluminum sheet so nothing major is going to hapen this weekend. I got some suplies though so I'll see what can be done
Oh sorry, I somehow missed your comment earlier. Reason why I want this to be a tower case is size of the footprint this case has. My desk is not the biggest one there is and I have multiple monitors, so there simply isn't much room foor big computer. I could always move my computer to the floor, but I just like to have it on my desk. Especially if I have nice selfmade computer I just can't see a reason why it should be hidden under the desk. And that top window isn't actually a window, it's exhaust hole that will be covered with mesh.
