I've started to get annoyed with my PC sound system (and so have my parents :p). I'm currently running an old Cambridge soundworks 5.1 set of speakers with an Audigy soundcard (original audigy). This isn't really that great at listening to music on, and especially late at night, I want some headphones to listen on.

So instead of getting some budget headphones, I thought I'd get a half decent set. But then I thought that my Audigy isn't exactly suited to playing stereo music through headphones.

I'd like, if possible, to also keep my old system for when I have people over, or when I'm watching a film, or for when I just don't want to wear headphones (I have no other speakers).

So, basically: what would a decent set of headphones be, for about 50-80 quid. I listen mainly to metal and stuff like Dream Theater, but I also have quite a bit of other stuff.
Also, what soundcard would be good to use with these, and will it be possible to run this alongside my current one and easily switch when I want to?

Edit: also, if I get a decent set of headphones, would they be ok to use with an mp3 player?

    1) The audigy is more than fine for playing music, the weak link is the fact its compressed audio.

    2) Closed back Cans, if you like metal the extra oompf they give the bass is worth it , but its down to personal preference.

    3) If it can be driven by a soundcard, it can be used with an MP3 player. The only ones that need thier own amps are probably out of your price range.

I would look at something like Senny HD 270's or 200 v1's

I just bought some Sennie HD215s for £38 inc. Used the ones Tim uses (who stole from them Trusted Reviews :D) and was instantly sold :D Closed back and encompasses the whole ear :)

I'll have a look into those, any more suggestions? Heard Grado are good, is it worth looking into them or not?
