I've got a Cambridge Audio 640A amp and some random floor standing speakers my mate gave me... nothing special.

The sound from them is fine but the bass isn't great, need to decide on buying a basic sub or save up a couple hundred and buy a new set of speakers.

Saw a Gale 4070 in my local richer sounds, the guy in the shop said its pretty decent for the price. http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=GALE-4070-MAP

    What do you lot think?

Well the Cambridge Audio 640A is actually quite special, its one of the best amps in its price range and matched with a decent pair of speakers will sing superbly :)

However you may find that a purist "audiophile" sound doesn't suit you, especialy if you are a bass head.

Personally im not a fan of subs, especially cheap ones for music.

What are the speakers you currently have?

If you want to save up some cash and buy a great sub that won't break the bank completely (while satisfying the audiophile in you) I'd suggest Definitive Technologies "Super Cubes" .. http://www.definitivetech.com/loudspeakers/subwoofers/subwoofers.html The base model starts at around $350-400 and goes up from there. They're compact, powerful, and have a self-powered amp. They pump out some very rich bass, and they're my personal sub-$1000 choice.

You can also buy them bundled with some very nice satellite speakers => which run off the self-powered amp (for the front channel if you're thinking 5.1), and a bundle like that can run you anywhere from $800 and up (but their $800 set is still the best bang for buck audiophile setup imo).

The speakers are 'Aural Envelope EX300', they don't seem bad to me but I'm no Audiophile. I'm just up for adding some more bass to my setup as I mostly listen to rock/hip hop/house and it's just not quite deep enough with the speakers I have.

Jasio - Not after 5.1. and tthose subs are from the US and im in the UK.

Crikey. Your floor standers don't have enough bass? V odd. Mine literally shake windows and radiators!

i like the look of the Gale 4070, and its price.

Could i hook one of them up via a 2 phono to 3.5mm jack cable to my Creative X-FI, as this has always been my weak area (home audio). got a few of those cables lieing around.

Personally, I'm going to grab one of these.

I doubt I'll be getting it soon enough to let you know how it is before you make your mind up, but hey.

Short discussion about it on av forums :B

thanks mate, tbh £100 would be my limit on a sub, as my hearing isn't spot on so expensive speakers are a waste for me as i cant hear all the high tones.

sorry again for the thread hi-jack

I went for B&W all round to go with my Cambridge Audio amp, sounds great to me and the volume will go to a level where it hurts before distortion. Bass wise theyre good too, get the windows moving. I've got a pair of secound hand B&W 603 S2 at the front, they're great value for money and the age doesn't show at all, sound as good as anything else in the price range. £200 from EBay

After reading a load more subwoofer reviews I don't think the 65W Gale will be enough as the room is 12ft x 20ft...

Has a word with Richer sounds on my way home and explained that I had a big room. Bought the Gale Sub as they said I could return it if I thought it wasn't good enough.

Cracking little sub, would prob be fine if you have a small room, but just not powerful enough for me. Going to see if the have a Mordaunt Short 309i instock (one of the guys at work has it and it is awesome) to swap it for or I'll get a refund and buy one online.
