    Afternoon people :)

I'm after a new base unit, and having done a bit of shopping around, i thought i'd come here for some advice. Basically i want a top-of-the-line system so that i can play Oblivion (among other games) the way that God intended them played, at full spec! I'm just after a complete base unit, no speakers or monitor or owt, and after the horrendous luck i've had recently with building my own machine, i'm after a pre-built one.

So, i've checked out a few places, and am currently favouring a system from Scan. For just over £1.5k i can get an Athlon 4000, 2gb Corsair DDR500/PC400, 512mb X1900 XT, Sound Blaster XFi music and a coupla other bits n bobs.

I'd prefer an AMD system, not overly fussed about dualcore (have read that some games have problems with it), and am after a topspec gfx card, and 2gb ram. Any suggestions of bits, or other places to look?

    Thanks for your time :)

All I'd say is if you're spending lots of cash (which you are), then go for dual core. There's more and more multithreading support in games now, and support will only keep on growing.

Raptors make a difference to the system too, so maybe get one of those as the System/Games disk (and a monster 300Gb+ for pr0n and MP3s and stuff, obviously ;)).

    tbh.
you will be kicking yourself in a few months if you go for single core cpu now with a build like that. ditch the 4000 and get a x2 3800

personally i'd build the machine myself as you would gain some experiance and also have fun while ur at it.

I to would go with dual core as it seems the industry is going that way, also the probs with dual core setups with game is only minor and only require an adjustment to howmany cores the games use.

Scan is a good place to look at their builds, also places like Komplett sell build kits and one of the other best places to look for kits is lowestonweb.com

thats seems pretty steep for what your getting, ive always built my owns pcs and saved a bundle...

but yeh if you want the best of the best buy a preoverclocked and supercooled pc from extreme prometeia (google it) they do crazy phase cooled sli graphixs and phase cooled cpus all prebuilt... these machines are crazy...

i miss my old prommie but ive got back to air cooling now cos its surprisingly quieter

I normally do build my own, my current machine was self-built about 2 years ago. Recently though i've just had endless trouble with new bits for a s754 machine i was building, and have never got the damned thing to work despite RMAing various components and changing EVERYTHING. Hence i'm going to get on done for me, with the nice 1yr onsite warranty for when it all goes south :)

As for phasechanged rigs, i think i'll stick to air or water cooling ;)
