I have a Dell 8400 with an 80 SATA HDD. I have a spare 120GB IDE Seagate Barracuda that I want ot put inside the machine. I bought the SATA cable and SATA to IDE adapter. I tried all the jumper settings and tried changing SATA and PATA settings in the BIOS. When I boot up, it can't find bootable drive. I was planning on rebuilding my machine, but would like to back everything up on the 120GB before I do anything else. Is there a specific reason why the system can't recognize the drive? Thanks in advance!
If you are only planning on using it to back everything up, then surely you can just disconnect an optical drive for the time it takes to back everything up?? Yatesy
all 4 channels are taken up by optical drives? other than that yatesy's idea is gonna be the easiest..
mm if he is just setting up from a reformat then he will need to use the F6 option to add the seagate drivers. otherwise if the setup is already going then perhaps all he will need to do is map the drive. *sorry i cant remember how to do this but it is so very simple.* otherwise buy a mobo like mine that already has the sata drivers imbedded in the mobo bios . good luck tho.
I have cleared up enough on my 120gb to do the backup of my 80gb. I will move it to the IDE cable for now (thanks for waking me up). After I finish the backup, I'll try setting up the way I really want during a fresh rebuild.
