ive just tried to overclock my 8400 to 3.6 it booted ok ran prime 95 with no probs but when i play games get blue screen saying contact vendor system has halted,it works fine at stocks speeds no probs, didnt know if it could be under voltage vcore or memory settings vcore is at 1.25 and memory was on auto as not sure what settings to use any help would be great e8400 asus p5n32-sli plus 2x2gb crucial ballistix tracer ddr2 800 650w quiet dark power tuniq 120 tower
you need to crank up your voltage a bit to like 1.4 and you should set your memeory voltage to the voltage it saids on the ram stick which i think is 2.1 or 2.0 you should also check how fast the mem is running at in the bios as it could be on a multiplyer setting so the higher you overclock the higher the mem goes so down clock that a bit to make sure that stable and then you can tweak it later
The overclock of the memory should be fine as the Multiplier of 9 would mean FSB would be at 400. As Bagman said, up the voltages.
it might not be a voltage issue, but a memory divider problem. If he was just upped the FSB to 400mhz, then the divider could be trying to push a total FSB speed of 960mhz, so an issue on that nvidia chipset could be the reason. The E8xxx series clocked very well and fine it hard to believe it needing a voltage increase at 3.6Ghz
I presume that you have another CPU with this board before an E8400, how far could its go before? Like Burnout post you shoud change the mem divider or get a high freq ram. I got an E8400 with vcore=1.30 its clock @ 3.8 so I suggest up the vcore abit more as well.
help overclocking yes had a e6600 which would overclock to 3.4 on auto settings no problems at all what should i look for on memory settings as i havent a clue other than i set it to unlinked in bios so that it stayed at 8oo was that right
I Never Crank up the Vcore with my CPU, and it is a E4XXX. ___________________________________________________________________ Luker In a first Time, Install Speed to watch you CPU Temperature. After, Overclock by shoot of 0,1 Ex: 3.1 if it boot 3.2 etc etc etc If your PC dont boot, Now crank up the Vcore by shoot of 0.05. (from 3Ghz 3.6 I dont think so but Overclocking is Science and nothing is perfect) Watch the Temperature, if in Idle it like 60degrees downclock it or Buy a better cooler. WARNING: Never boost the Vcore like from 2.5 to 3.5....NEVER ! You'll kill you CPU
On the stock cooler thats fine, but if your using an aftermarket cooler you should probably get slightly lower temps. I just built an e8400 based system and oc'd it to 3.6 by simply increasing the FSB to 400, it runs at around those temps on the stock cooler.
