What do you guys think. Personally I think closing the news of the world is the wrong thing. The actions that were undertaken by some people were appalling but I think it should be key people going, not the entire paper. I'm interested to know what others think. Like I said I don't condone what was done, I find it sickening.
Im not 100% clued up on the story (ive only caught bits of various news channels) but from what i can gather, the sacking of the people involved wouldnt solve anything, with lost advertising revenue and possibly a public that wouldnt buy the paper now, there was probably very little option but to close it down tbh
In any case, with the NoW closing, the world has just got a little bit better. ^_^ No staff will be harmed in the flushing of this tabloid. It will be redeployed to that other mental ass wipe of tabloids, the Sun. Then the NoW will come bobbing back to the surface in six months under a new name, like a turd floating in the stream of human consciousness. Personally, I think closing it is a good thing. This may be the actions of a few people, but it was the product of an entire corporate culture, if not actively encouraged then tacitly endorsed by management. The message to editor-in-chief and all management cronies should be clear: cross the line, and your whole little empire gets terminally shitcanned.
I've not really got involved in all this bad news saga, but all I know is I'm gonna buy one on Sunday, just think a few pence spent on a paper my turn into a money maker in years to come it is the last issue after all.
Closing the paper has to be one of the most cynical decisions ever made in the British media. NOTW had been losing readers for years and Murdoch has been looking to launch the "Sun on Sunday" for a while. This scandal gives the perfect excuse to clear house of a dying brand, a toxic reputation, and distances News International from blame for the laws that have been broken by the company. Next week we'll start seeing NI put out stories about how NOTW was a rogue part of the company the no-one in NI could have possibly controlled. Murdoch and Cameron will wait a few months before completing the sale of BSkyB and the rich will go home richer without any kind of censure. Implicating Andy Coulson for bribing police officers was a warning to Cameron. As long as our PM stays in line the evidence against Coulson will remain questionable. Otherwise Murdoch will use it to damage Cameron immensely. Cameron (and other PM's before him) got into bed with the devil. The price of complete truth in this story is politically too high so don't expect any real justice, just a long line of platitudes about "getting to the truth" until the story dies of old age.
I'm glad it's gone, but sad to know that all the readers will just move to another terrible waste of paper (not going to name names as don't want to start a flame war) And Nexxo, you really do have a way with words I could never hope to achieve, I salute you good sir.
Both NOTW and The Sun contain nothing but bullshite and how to fit in your summer bikini whiel staring at naked conspiracy photos of Ryan Giggs (see page 4- 24) I'm glad.
I've never been a fan of the New of the World, so no great loss to me. I feel for some that may loose their jobs, however most will probably relocate to the Sun. It was a move that was obviously felt necessary to smooth the BSkyB takeover, however it would appear that the government have bowed to perceived public pressure and delayed the decision to possibly September. The indecision by the government is now impacting the value of BSkyB, share prices are tumbling rapidly.
So where can a non-brit read up on this story? I find it interesting, but nobody is covering it AT ALL in Holland.
