    The thread starter-

I am at a NASA conference for teachers in Orlando. Funny event happened yesterday. One of the NASA guys made a DVD using iMovie and iDVD of our last meeting. Part of the evening program was showing the video using the Dell laptop NASA typically uses. It had Windows XP Professional. They had some problems:

    1) They had trouble making the laptop mirror on the projector. They kept saying "Oh, we still don't have the video? Well, let's call up our next speaker while they work it out.

    2) Once they finally got the menu screen running, they started the video, and suddenly the computer logged them out.

So, the Mac guy who made the video walked over, and plugged in his PowerBook. With one flash, the projectors displayed the DVD Player screen, and he started the video. About half of the room seemed to be quite pleased about the Mac performance. One teacher called out "Call Bill Gates!"

Are they running Windows for Return to Flight? I'll ask...

Just thought it was funny. Also, typical - You don't need to 'know your machine' with a mac - remember -
    "It just works"

    Really.

    depends really
i managed to get my dad's Dell laptop to output to our tv more easily than the powerbook he borrowed from work
whilst it did "just work", it didnt work as well as the XP laptop
with the powerbook i had to go into the display settings thing and get it to detect the tv, then it worked ok
with the laptop all i had to do was double click the avi and have it open in zp, it automatically sent the video out through svideo, no configuration

Still pretty scary that NASA couldnt get a laptop to function properly, guess it wasnt in the budget to test it before hand eh?

I promise that there really is a reason that all the reviewers called OS 10.4 the best and/or most advanced operating system in the world.

I will post links to the reviews if you want.

No Need. They've been posted before, and I doubt Alex would be interested in them anyway.

Wow, those nasa people must have been really dumb - on Dell laptops you just plug the monitor in and press the switch monitor hotkey (Fn + F7, there's even a picture on the key ffs) on the keyboard, and it switches to crt. Press it again and it changes to mirror mode and once again puts it back to normal. I can't personally think of an easier way of doing it - works perfectly every time, unless you have a widescreen monitor and a normal 4:3 one, when it defaults to putting the widescreen in 4:3 mode for mirroring.

It's pretty simple, all the F keys have FN functions assigned to them, and F7 has a little picture of monitors on it...

It's always nice to see this kind of thing, but it's just as likely that the bloke who had the powerbook could have walked up with a beat up laptop running windows 2000 and have it work flawlessly.

I remember sitting in a seminar and the PSP developers couldn't get their winXP laptop to output to a projector. In the end the computer science and electronic system engineering students were shouting out suggestions.

Same type of thing happened at work recently, however it was reversed...

Plugin the Projector to PowerBook. PowerBook screen fades off but doesnt come back on and nothing happens on the Projector.

Up I come with my HP lappy, plug it in my lappy detects it and sorts the screen cloning for me and sets the projectors max res.

I laughed at the poor mac user who was currently trying to rip out the PB battery to switch it off...

Oh and and the PB was runing OSX "it just works" Tiger ;)

This just in: Computers do what they are told to do.
In other news: water is wet.

PC's work great when you know what you are doing. I've seen people mess up Apples as much as people mess up Windows based PCS. The key is, if you know how to use your computer, it will just work. And for those who feel Apple's are easier, then great, it's a good thing you use an apple.

I borrowed an iBook for a few weeks with OSX and got it up and running on my wireless network at home, then visited my parents and could not get it to work on my dad's network no matter how much I tried, so I popped out my wife's older PC laptop and it detected the network, requested a WEP key, and we were up and running in less than a minute.

I think it really just boils down to what you are used to and nothing more.

I am, however, impressed that most of my mac friends are able to see their monitors with their noses so high in the air...
