Make sure you're buying it with the lens and not just the body.

I've got the D50, with the 18-55mm kit lens. Lovely camera, but you need to know what you're doing. It's not like a point and shoot in any stretch of the imagination. If you've never had any experience with manual features on a camera it may not be wise to jump straight into the SLR pool.

The Nikon SLR's are VERY good cameras.

D40 or D40x? There have been some changes to the standard D40.

Edit:/ the one you've linked to comes with the standard kit lens.

All DSlr's have some kind of auto mode. But if your not looking to use the advance / manual features then there really isn't any point to buying one as your essentially left with a expensive point + shoot.

Yep, that'll do. As long as it says "with AF-S lens" and not "Body Only", you're okay.

btw, have a good read through Ken Rockwell's guide on how to use your D40. It's very good.

The D40x has a higher MP count, but has worse picture quality as the internals aren't built properly for the upped MP count and the photos turn out fuzzy-looking (or so reviews are saying, anyway).

Remember you buy a dSLR with the intent to learn how to use it. Don't just assume it's broken or crap because your pictures haven't come out alright, they take time to get used to.

I agree with bindi. I really need to want everything that goes with the dSLR, learning how to use it, expensive accessories etc.
Once you have one and you start to get the hang of it though it's great fun and I've never looked back.
6.1MP isn't bad by any stretch just don't try to print in A0 sized paper and you'll be fine. Obviously as an alternative to the Nikon don't forget to check Canon too. If you can try it out in a shop first also all the better :)

I have checked a lot of facts and compared the specs for a few different models comparing SLRs and point-and-shoots. You can even cross-shop the low-end SLRs and high-end point-and-shoots in terms of price and features (although an SLR is a different kind of beast altogether). After a lot of thinking and careful consideration, I've come to the conclusion that youre a dumbasss.

It all depends on whether or not you want to take snapshots or photographs. You can do both with any camera really but if you want to take decent pictures, buy an SLR and spend 3 days reading the manual before you even turn it on. Take as many pictures as you can and read up on composition, lighting, etc etc.

If taking pictures of your mates at a pub on friday night is what the camera is going to be for, buy yourself a decent point-and-shoot. I'm a Canon fanboy and I'll tell you to get something from the Powershot A-line. The S3 is decent but at that point you're better off just getting an SLR and jumping into it.

    What an odd chap.

If you want an easy-to-use but 'kicass' camera, just buy a decent point-and-shoot. Don't waste your time with an SLR.

Most point-and-shoots are pretty good nowadays. You can't go wrong with the Fujifilm models, or Canon, or even Sony.
