I would choose the Canon Powershot A640.

But you should look at the Canon Powershot G7; it's better than the A640 in my opinion.

    1. Stop suggesting random cameras
    2. Read reviews and judge what you need
    3. Go to a shop and try out a selection of cameras you are interested in
    4. ???
    5. BUY ONE/PROFIT

    It's that easy.

Edit: And the Trev has a point there, the G7 is a beast of a compact.

The Nikon P5000 certainly sounds good look at the size of an optional lens on it!

There's also the new Canon S5 IS - whether it's actually any good/any better than previous versions, idk.

The S3 IS is certainly a damn fine camera though. It's stayed in the dpreview charts for as long as it's been released I think!

Another make to consider is Panasonic and their Lumix range. FZ-7, FZ-8 or TZ-1 are all highly rated.

Just go for one, I'd be surprised if you ended up with a lemon these days.

Sorry but my choice would be the D70s with a 18-70mm lens, its a great camera with a decent lens.

Again i must say owning the best camera money can buy dosen't mean you can take fantastic photos, just gives you more choices in the future if you get good.

D40 is ok, but the Canon 300D makes it look silly, and there of the same age.

350D and 400D Canons can be picked up cheap (well cheap for a DSLR that is!).

stay clear of any other brands, not because there bad, but the range of lens is limited and thus drives the cost of lens up.

(if you fancy arguing against me, il let you know i use to teach photography at a college, and have been in photography for many years so think about what you say very carefully.)

Er...I'm not sure that's quite right. The 300D was already being replaced by the 350D in February 2005, whereas the D40 was announced in Q4 2006, so there's a bit of a difference. The two are fairly well-matched as far as features go, hence the D40 just costing slightly more because of the fact that it's 3 years newer.

I honestly don't think a dSLR is the right choice if you can't be bothered/don't want to learn how it works. Unprocessed photos from a 300D/D40/whatever can look worse than those from a compact if you don't post-process at all - it's all part of the production of decent photos.

I'm really thinking you don't want to go down the SLR line. I like your suggestion of the Powershot A640. My mother owns one and it's a fine camera. Its exposures are always pretty much spot-on and it does a pretty decent job of flash metering at night. The batteries are indeed a pain in the ass but that's why you invest in a battery charger and 8 rechargeable AAs (or 4 if you're just going to charge overnight) which basically solves the problem.

The A640 has a decent range from close-up macro stuff to whatever the zoom is on it. It also has a manual exposure mode but it's a bit fiddly. As always, read the manual before you switch it on to get the most out of it (I've found the PowerShot to be less intuitive than the 20D). My mother's pictures have definitely evolved from snapshots into what I would call decent pictures, but she also has me to yack on about weird photography stuff and is probably picking up on it.

All in all, I'd say go for the A640 and you won't be disappointed. An SLR is probably not what you'll want to be lugging around with you. I love my 20D and the associated kit that goes with it, but I also just like grabbing the A640 and shoving it in my pocket on my way out the door.

What? the DSLR outputs in jpeg or Raw, the factory default settings on an entry level camera is set at jpeg. if the camera is set on auto, the images will be the same$ as a compact as long as the F stop and zoom are the same and resulotion.

SLR lens are of greater quality so they tend to give better images, the abilty to change lens for situation is what makes the DSLR and SLR cameras are clear winners.

For Mr computer KIng, i would suggest a compact possibly a Fujifilm s9500 as it uses compact flash and has a built in tilt screen, and has the look of a DSLR, has a decent flash and has better menu options.

I use a fujifilm S7000 and it hasn't failed me at all, i am still an old skool film user most of the time, but i am slowly turning over to DSLR. As soon as iv got a Spare £2000 i can replace all my kit, and well that wont happen for a long time! lol!

I picked up a 55-200 Nikon DX all the shiz acronyms for £100 brand new from Dixons website. Bloody bargain, I'd say. Marry that to a D40+kit lens 18-55 DX Mk2, for £330 and it's a decent setup.

Just because it's not Canon, doesn't mean it has to be expensive.

Not everyone has to be a camera geek in this world... But I bet Computerking is one of those people who after buying a DSLR, rates the camera low and under Cons writes comments like NO LIVE PREVIEW ON THE LCD, IT JUST SHOVS SME NMBERZ. (and for some reason write in Caps and such manner)

The S3 is a more versatile camera with a bigger sensor. It can do everything the A640 can and more, which is why it is more expensive. Go to dpreview.com and read up on it.
