It relates to the size of the image captured, the resolution of it. The higher the MP count, the higher the res the better the quality when you get it printed, and the closer you can crop.

If you have any more questions will you please PLEASE google it first before asking on here because all this information is readily available.

The MP is the number of pixels in the pictures the camera takes. The SENSOR is what captures the pixels.

If the sensor is small it can make the picture noisy (a fine grain all over it) and have difficulty in low light

If you have a lot of MP then they will be crammed into the sensor so that causes noise.

You do not need more than 4MP unless you want to print pictures larger than A4 paper (which i don't imagine you do)

So pick a camera with a large sensor and not too many MP crammed onto it. That is why the S3 is more expensive despite having less MP the images will be better

More MP does not equal better pictures

do not buy a camera without knowing what you are paying for.

in fact, this goes for everything.

do spend money without knowing EXACTLY what you are spending that money over.

If you don't want a dSLR as they seem too complicated, go for a Fujifilm S6500. I've got one and they are reviewed as being the best £200 or so digital camera. Great picture quality, nice easy guides and very easy to 'point-and-shoot' if that is what you want.

However, you'd have to invest in an XD memory card and beware of the size of the camera (its quite a bit bigger than say a Sony-H5 or the like, but smaller than a D40)

Forget about mega pixels, in your case 6Mp is probably even better as you'll be able to take more photos and use less space in your hard drive. 10MP would be needed if you want to print very large posters.

S3 is an awesome camera (and takes really nice video clips with stereo sound too) but $480 for S3 is a total ripoff.
    It's a $310-400 camera, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830120043

I think Nath was pointing out, that if the user is unable or unwilling to learn how to use an SLR then, chances are the output will be of poorer quality than that of a good P&S.

    Hi Computerking,

I don't think you will be getting good grades anyway (jk). Seriously, I don't think an dSLR is what you are looking for. I believe you are looking for a quality P&S camera. Most brand camera's are pretty good, especially in range of your budget. Look for one with a bigger zoomrange.

I'm glad you started this thread and not went out and bought yourself a dSLR, when expecting all the wrong things.

    Good luck,
    L

Yes, Fuji and Sony are good, but from what I've experienced, it'd even harder to beat a canon. It would really bring out the colours in your work and it'd ead simple to use. Buy a tripod and decent memory card with it and you will be flying!

I happend to have a S2-IS and if you want the point and shoot type loll you're in for a surprise the menus in it are a bit large loll
This is the back of a S2-IS, it's kinda SLR but not full blown. And yes you have a live LCD that flips and turn lol and the option to shoot very nice video.
And oh yes! a very good zoom and a up to the lens supermacro (really focuses the object even if you stick it to the filter)

Any question about it you can e-mail me, i'll be glad to help :thumb:
