I previewed the console a few weeks ago, and I have to say I think this review is spot on. My reaction to the 3D was certainly along the lines of "wow" followed by "meh", with some games (Pro Evo for example) utilising it well and usefully, with others, specifically racers, being rather unsuited to it as the effect was all too easy to distort.

As well as the issue of developers using the gimmicky 3D effectively, Nintendo are going to have a hard time competing in the portable games market since they have outright refused to adopt any kind of lower pricing model, opting for quality over quantity. Higher price does not equal higher quality though, as the countless number of shovelware titles on Wii in particular illustrates. This console is going to need a number of exciting killer apps if it's to succeed beyond it's initial launch.

I think Zelda is when it's going to kick off. That's the bad thing, as the majority of gamers will buy the console for the N64 remakes, as opposed to the new games.

I say it's a bad thing, it's the reason why my 3DS should hopefully be here tomorrow morning! And I can't wait for a new gadget!

The original DS had 4 versions, DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL. I'll probably get a 3DS when they release the next version. Which I'm guessing will have better battery life and a better viewing angle for 3d, and probably lighter.

    Console
    Charger
Docking Station (basically a charger you can just place it on, charger plugs into that)
2GB SD card (preinstalled in unit, can be removed)
Augmented Reality Cards (6, different designs and uses)
    At least 1 extendable stylus
1 manual big enough to beat someone to death with

TN displays are cheap, and the DS only displays a limited color gamut anyway..

So far I've only gone through setting up the wifi, sorting the profile and date and time, played a bit of Face Raiders, and I think I've seen the future ...

Whether or not this is a hit, it is a PRIME example of where things are headed.

Disclaimer: try one before you buy one!

Added: So I've had it for a few days now. I'm still impressed. Even on the icon menu selection screen I can clearly see 4 levels of depth which reminds me of the old stereoscopic glasses on PC, obviously not to the same level of detail nor resolution. One thing though, the graphics don't leap out of the screen and you get the feeling you are looking in a hole. I'm not sure if that will change as they get to grips with it, but so far you won't get rockets launching towards you and feel the need to duck behind the sofa.

The Console and its tech are certainly not perfect, but I do think that the 3DS is an indication of the start of handheld glasses-less 3D gaming.

Sold mine for a profit of £10, battery life is abysmal, and for the price tag the build quality could be so much better. The sliders for sound and 3D are a step back from the DSi and feel cheap and flimsy. I love nintendo, why? mine also had dead pixel near the centre of the 3D screen which was annoying.... I think my DSi is still the choice on the move....

Face Raiders sounds like a porn movie.

um, guys, the 3DS isn't that bad. true, there hasn't been many good games released, but hey the legend of zelda ocarina of time 3D was a great game. i played it and loved it and there are more to follow.

plus, who would buy something just for the 3D? i personally never went to a 3D movie theater with the purpose of watching it in 3D.. it wasn't worth it, but the the handheld is a pretty good device. Just wait for good games to come and it'll set off. I remember that the original DS had a really hard timty oo. everyone thought touch screen was stupid, and everyone was bashing it, but it did really well. heck, even non gamers were buying it.

i'm sure with the right line up of games, the 3DS will do just fine. its a good handheld and does a lot for being such a small portable, so keep it up nintendo!

p.s. STOP COMPARING TO IPHONE! its a phone, touch gadget. that's for jjust casual gaming. its not MEANT for gaming. comparning Iphone to the Droid is one thing, quite another for 3DS. if anything, compare it to PSP Go, or something. iphone is agreat device too in its own right, but its not made for gaming. who knows, maybe apple will make something for gaming like microsoft did, but for now its not so please leave out the comparisons. thank you

Very tempted now the price is coming down to what it should have been when launched.
