You would be quite correct in thinking that.

I may just wait on upgrading my kids DSi as I was about to go for a DSiXL. If it's a 2011 launch then I may just upgrade now for the extra £60 and then see what the 3DS looks like at E3.

Got to hand it to Nintendo as they've kept this format going for decades and doing it so bloody well.

If anyone is curious, the general consensus is that this DSi game uses similar '3D' technology to the 3DS.

Basically, a camera using head-tracking technology changes the in-game perspective according to the angle you're viewing from. It's a pretty smart implementation as it requires no glasses, shouldn't cause eye-strain and is cheap.

I can't wait for the device as the DS has slowly turned into my most played game console but could do with serious usability improvements (and for god-sake make one with man-sized controls).

    Edit: Wrong video.

That's pretty good, I'm expecting 3D tech to penetrate every level of the market soon.

3D without glasses is something that would interest me.

If it looks anything like the 3D photo frames I've seen, it'll look awful. I don't think 3D is the way to go for a handheld imho.

I hate to say it, but I'm sceptical. Face-tracking tech isn't 100%, and I can see there being some pretty odd perspective changes here and there and the camera thinks you're somewhere completely different to where you really are. I have had too many bad experiences with full range motion thing you get with Wii Sports Resort (is it just me or does that thing spaz out pretty much constantly?) to be totally convinced by the idea. Still, if it works it'll be awesome :).

The thing about Nintendo recently is that they have pretty much been bang on the money for a couple of years. More importantly, they haven't dropped the ball on anything gameboy/DS related.

I'm sure it will be armoured and fully operational by the time the Emporer arrives! (You just get the chance to recycle Starwars lines anymore do you?)

An alternative would be the dual-layor LCD display technique: tiny mirrors direct the light from every other pixel about 2 inches to the left at a distance of about 18 inches. Essentially if you hold the DS at the right angle at the right distance, your eyes pick up two different images and true 3D ensues.

The tech is real: I read an article in Mobile Magazine a few months ago about a new mobile handset demonstration that used the technology. Here's an article on the same thing: here

Alternatively, there's the 3D method the iPhone has been demonstrated to use. The Accelerometer is used to calculate what angle that device has been moved to, and the image onscreen is moved accordingly. Example Youtube here

The first thing I did when I saw this announcement was to make sure it wasn't April 1st!
