Thanks for the reply, I shall attempt the LCD mod firstly, and if this goes succesfully I may decide to purchase a soldering Iron and get my hands dirty (or burnt) with the GPOs. Firstly though I must purchase said LCD, can't wait to unleash my VB skills on it though, some oif the stuff others have done is cool and I will attempt some really nice stuff also. Now to dust off the old Credit Card.
again with the noobness.... now whats the deal with these filters u guys sell? just a quick way to change the color of the lcd?
Ive bought the lcd and was wondering how i could make a stand for it ive just found the best thing ever . It a clear plastic standing photo frame form WHsmiths and it was only 50p . Its just right with a bit of modding Also my orignal question still stands . I Ordered the MO lcd , but i forgot to order a serial cable and power cable . Iam sure i can make up an power cable . But is it postible to make my own serial cable . Iam sure it possible form look at the manuel , most of the connects look the same as 1s ive seen in mappers . Its just iam in the uk and i dont want to pay another $14 postage for a cable
buying two serial connectors 9one male one female) a little bit of wire ad knocking up your own serial cable according to the lcd manual is very easy, alternatively buying a serial cable from maplin should be fine, it's fairly standard cable... you shouldn't have any problems. Cheers, r.
Re: again with the noobness.... THe filters are only for VFD as FL@MeS said. I have tried putting a filter in front of a LCD, but it just didn't work. The LCD is not bright enough to really work. The VFD is extreamly bright. As well, since the backlight color is yellow, the glass is green and then yu put a filter on top, just that color combination will not work.
Two options for you... One: Moddify your own power cable and get your own serial cable, or e-mail Adam alintott@matrixorbital.com and he will be able to moddify your order and let you order the cables and just add it to your shipment... Two: Modifying a 3 1/2" drive power cable for use with a Matrix Orbital Display Module. Below are before and after pictures for what your connector should look like in order to power either the regular or the wide voltage (-V option) versions of the module. Please make sure that the proper configuration is used for your display. If there is any question of which type of module you have, it may be confirmed by looking for a fairly large black device mounted near the power connector (4 pin SIP) on the board. If this device is about 1 cm2 with two metal legs and a tab, and contains the printed letters "78MO5" on it, then you have a wide voltage module. WARNING: DO NOT connect the module until the following modifications are made! Using a sharp tool, push the small tab on the metal pin on each wire you need to move and gently pull on the wire. The wire and pin should slide out of the connector easily. Now bend the tab back out slightly and insert the wire back into its new location. Any unused wires should be cut off and the end taped with a small piece of electrical tape to ensure that it will not touch anything and cause damage. Note that both middle (black) wires are the same and it does not matter which one is used. Turn on machine. Smile as you see the display tell you what BIOS version it has (or in the case of newer modules, a blinking cursor will appear).
On monday when I get to the office, I'll post some info on how to make your little box and cabling a ton easier... (you just have to be good with a soldering iron)
A good Soldering iron will cost about $100USD, having variable temp control is great on it! Make sure to get a couple different size tips, like one really fine tip and one more standard size... As far as burning your fingers, it happens to the best of us... but you will be suprised how fast your body learns NOT to do it. Also, LCDC has the ability to have plugins So you can give that a look
You guys really know the meaning of Customer service. I contacted you on wednesday to ask about UK shipping and got a reply in about 5 minutes, and now all this. Marvellous.
humm looks like i could manage to make my own power and serial cable . I dont want to mess MO about with orders . Also iam making a remote unit (i.e. not in the pc) , so making my own cables will be a better thing Big thx to henry and TheCheeseMan
