With the help of my dad (who is a chemical engineer), I've build two single stages and a cascade. Pretty easy when someone else is telling you what to do! But I'm not an expert of fluid mechanics - he just said you need to add a way of preventing oil that is too thick from reentering the compressor.

I doubt I'll go back to phase cooling though, it's too much of a hassle for an 'everyday' computer for me really.

I was at my local paintball shop, getting my and a mate's HPA tanks filled when the guy filling it put my tank down onto the edge of a table. Unfortunately it wasn't quite balanced properly and rolled off, hitting the reg on the floor. Long story short, massive venting of gas (it was only filled to 200bar - could have been worse :p) tank flies off across the room like a rocket, smashing into half the displays in the shop. Someone got fired, and someone got a new much better carbon fibre tank for free.

    That's what I meant about the 14 litres x 200bar :).

These from BOC are filled to 230bar @ 15°c. The regulator I use for it can take up to 300bar input so even if I had a new tank and it was a really hot day, there wouldn't be a problem :).

That's something I didn't know... the invisible flame with hydrogen and oxygen welding. Surely there must be something visible though? To indicate where the flame is...

    There are several reasons I chose to mix propane with oxygen for brazing;

    1) Propane tanks you only have to pay a deposit for and don't need rental fees

    2) It's much safer than using acetylene (and less explosive)

    3) Propane doesn't affect the insurance on the house

    4) The flame temperature is only a few hundred degrees lower than if I were using acetylene. (And I can still melt steel with this setup, so it's warm enough for brazing a phase change system).

Cool :). I have a cascade which does -81°c with co2 and a shot or r23 but I haven't posted it on any forums yet because it doesn't yet have any proper safety devices, so firstly I don't want to get flamed at, and secondly I don't want to be responsible for anyone not using safety devices and injuring or even killing themselves.

I will post the cascade when it has a pressure cut-off on it. And I am also going to put R1150 in the second stage at some point so I can reach -100°c or lower :).

About the oil thing... I honestly don't think there will be any problems without the oil sep :). Everyone I know only uses oil seperators in cascades with 2 stages or more.

Not really - take a look at the space shuttle main engines on takeoff, they burn hydrogen and oxygen together. All you get is a slight white glow (probably the surrounding air glowing incandescent), and you probably won't get that when welding.

Thanks :). That unit was actually payed for by my friend Alan btw!

Although I have bought most the tools, and i've already built another single-stage and a cascade. It's taken me a long time and a lot of money to get to where I am now!

If you start learning about phase-change now, then there is a good chance that in a year from now you will know exactly how they work :). If I could give you a bit of advice... it would be this: If you only want 1 unit to use on your system then the best thing you can do is learn all about single-stages and then buy one from a custom builder. Don't go buying all the tools if you only intend on making 1 unit... that's what costs a fortune!

I must admit there is not much of a market for these... mainly because of the cost of them. The cheapest I could make a single-stage for (including a metal case and LCD controller) would be about £350 or somewhere thereabouts.

I will send you a pm in the next few weeks (probably after my exams). The case is actually quite an expensive part so the price would probably be much lower.

The whole unit could just be bolted to a sheet of plywood or something for transport, then you could do as you wish with the unit, whether it go inside a computer case, or you make your own case :).
