HI guys My pc froze while playing some music yesterday so I switched it off and on again and now the drive light is coming on, flickering and also the cd drive lights, but nothing else happens, it just sits and hums, the monitor stays on standby, it wont go into safe mode (f8), and it wont boot from any cd, even the original xp disk. Ive checked cables and connections. Ive not had one problem with this pc since i bought it custom build 13 months ago (damn those 12month warranties). The monitor does not come on at all just stay on standby. Ive moved the CMOS jumper to reset CMOS with no change in result and I then also removed the battery just to be sure and still no result. I have stripped the mobo down to just psu and fans and same result, all fans came on, mobo led on. No beeps or strange noises at all. In stages I added back in the ram and swirched back on - nothing, then the GPU, SC, nothing.. no change. Just comes on and whirrs with fans and green led on the mobo. Ive tried booting with rescue cd, windows xp cd, and floppy xp rescue disk and no joy...the lights flicker on the cd drives but they dont fire up. I really want to get this sorted cos im missing my online gaming buddies and battles are being lost cos im not there! lol.. I can afford to get a new mobo or processor but i dont know which if eitehr it might be. Any help appreciated! Max XP home sp2, Asus P5N su, dual core intel 2.2 ghz, 2 GB DDR2, 37GB Raptor and 300 GB sata II, 750w psu, Radeon x1950pro 512mb, M-Audio Delta.
your board and cpu have 3 year warranties, your raptor 5, and most off HDD's have 3. Any way, likely causes are PSU, Mobo or CPU. Though RAM can cause the problem, and its easy to take out to check - No RAM, you system should beep (depends on the BIOS to which way it'll beep), If no beeps go back to look at the above 3. It sounds like Mobo, but I'd try the PSU first.
Thanks Golygus, but how do i test to see which it is? I have already stripped away all perphs and the mobo isnt beeping in anyway at all even when it only has the psu and cpu connected. The psu is firing up with light and fan and there is a green led on the mobo which lights up when on, the lights on drives are also comin on, so there is power getting to them. I have a spare working psu.. i guess i could try connecting it up again.. but its only 450w max
Try a different graphics card, I had this problem about 3 days ago which sucks because instead of using a 6800GT im now using an 9250 radeon :S still it gives me an excuse to buy a HD 3850 pro It does really sound like one of your components has just burnt out, so remove all non essential hardware and add one piece at a time to find the dodgy one. If it still doesnt boot with all the cards removed then its probably a cpu or memory problem as pointed out above, that being said remove the memory the computer will still boot but will beep you a warning. If that happens you know its a memory problem.
My guess would be the motherboard. A very similar thing happened to my Asus P5n32 SLI SE over the Christmas period. Very annoying I can tell you. The green led that told me that the board was getting power still lit up but it didn't post or beep or anything.
thanks for the suggestions...yeh as i said above... i have already stripped the mobo down and replaced components one by one and the mobo is not responding (beeping) at any stage... I have also now tried another psu and the same results... from what people are saying its looking more and more like its the mobo, but i want to be sure before i chase asus for a replacement. How can i determine between a faulty cpu or mobo? Im tempted to use the moment to upgrade the mobo (if thats the problem) and put the replacemet in my secondary pc, get it up to gaming level which means if this happens again i wont be locked out from my games..lol
Without another mobo there's no way to tell if it's mobo or CPU. Chances are pretty good that it's mobo though, it's pretty rare for a CPU to die without you doing something major to it first.
750W is shear overkill for your machine, 450W would be a much more economic choice - so long as its a good quality unit. Take a 350W good quality supply over a cheap 550W any day. Watts aren't the most important thing anyway. As for your trouble, it does sound like mobo, but try the PSU just in case. Indeed so. Asus are also a pain to deal with in the UK, so I suggest contacting US/International and they should get the UK dept to contact you with an RMA.
I dont know, when I had to replace the board im using now 11 months into warrenty they were very helpfull and had no problems, guess I was lucky. As for determining between a mobo or cpu problem, the only thing you can really do is test the cpu at a friends house otherwise you're outta luck.
Hi guys, Thanks for all teh advice here. As i needed the pc pronto i got myself a cheaper board and cpu bundle (Asrock 2CORE1333-2.66G Socket 775 Motherboard Bundle including E2140 Overclocked to 2.66GHz ) while i wait on sorting out warranty and getting a replacement. The pc works fine now. I obviously now want to test if its the cpu or mobo thats faulty. Ive never swapped cpu's round before. Is there anything i should know before i attempt it?
