Hi all, My problem is that i got a new laptop and when i try to download games off the steam or anything of torrent etc my internet is not useable. It downloads but internet don't work for surfing or watching movies online. Before i had my new laptop, I had an PC and my parents had a laptop. They had no problems surfing net or watching movies online while i downloading but now i got new laptop it just cuts internet everythere! I am using BT Home Hub and both laptops are connected Wirelessy. Is there any way making it better? So i can surf the web or my parents can watch movies while i donwload as before? Thank you.
i don't know about steam, but torrents will choke your connection if you don't limit the upload bandwidth. go to speedtest.net, test your upload bandwidth, and then limit your torrent client's upload speed to 90% of that.
It's not just torrent. It was an example. Because on old PC i did not have any problems even when the torrent was downloading 2 or 3 games and internet was fine on other laptop. But now i cannot download a game or play CSS because then there is no internet anywhere else
just a guess but the old pc may have been limited in that it didn't have the ability to use all the bandwidth available. the new one does.
That'd have to be a pretty damn slow computer really - internet bandwidth is nothing in the network traffic stakes.
Maybe it's because before you used wired connection (did you?) and only your parents used wireless, and now you both use wireless so it might be the wireless connection bottlenecking. Also, some routers have problems handling over 60 or 100 connections, so make sure you've allowed max 60 connections in the torrent program.
I don't even know what it is to be honest. Yes i did use wired connection before, it is not a problem using it now really but i am not sure it will sort the problem. I tried switching off wireless yesterday and use wired but when i launched game download on Steam internet was off again. It's not torrent i am so worried about, it's Steam, games and downloads. I try using wired connection today and see how everything goes, but thanks for your advice and just to make you know I am a noob in all these network things...Like ports etc. Thank you.
I've noticed that Vuze (Azureus) seems to completly tie up your connection regardless of what is actually being downloaded. I switched to uTorrent and that stopped. Just a thought.
Well I have used wired connection for few days and it seems to be ok, but I have not tested it with torrents or steam downloads. But gaming now causing no problem on other laptop. Thank's for all your advice. Been with bit-tech for years but never registered =) Very nuce community
