Hi, my friend recieved an email pretending to be from facebook and has subsiqeuntly installed some viruses, no he cant get online, the internet connection manager says everything is ok but web pages wont load, I heard there was a virus which caused this, however I dont seem to be able to get rid of it.

The homepage loads everytime but nothing else. I did a scan using AVG and it said Internet saving Optimzer: potentially dangerous but I couldnt uninstall it, it kept saying interupted by user, so I tried to remove it from as power user which looked like it might have worked but still no internet.

I've restarted in safe mode and I'm currently scanning machine but it keeps saying at the end of each line (command prompt) Locked file. not tested. then it goes onto the next line, scans for a bit and the same results locked file. not tested.

Does anyone know how I can remove this virus???

    Thanks

    Darren

    Try using system restore.

    Good Idea

I'm going to try that, didnt think it would make much difference being a Virus. gonna try everything. I'm also going to restore defaults and turn off all add ons because if I can load pages before everything on IE loads there must be some sort of workaround.

In the worst case scenario theres nothing like reformating the hard drive for its virus cleaning abilities.

Don't even bother trying to hunt down that virus, just reformat and do a clean install. Much less hassle.

Well said!!! A while ago I fought with a trojan which had a form of antispyware and disabled the Windows security, passed the Mcafee Antivirus and was so nasty. The job of the trojan was to load the workload of the system and keep it busy with the processor loaded at 100%. The only chance was to remove it with a special utility made by mcafee of course. That trojan did not leave me to install the utility just if I change the name of the exe and install it.

So if you know the name of the file or the program which caused the problem go on google and you will find somtehing to fight with but you need a lot of free time and a box with beer to remove it or to reinstall the OS.

I've managed to fix it, it took, AVG, Avira and ESET nod32 to finally get rid of 14 viruses, took me 9 hours of bloody mindedly messing about. I think reformatting is a little heavy handed, If a person goes into the hospital with a virus they dont kill him to cure it! lol.

    They don't? Oh.

Good job, btw. I find a check of the boot items in msconfig and the registry (HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run) is good to do first, as a fair amount of nasties are simple exe files that load on startup.

Heavy handed? Why such sympathy for an operating system?

    start up

So this folder is where everything starts up from in the registry, thats handy to know, cheers. how would you go about stopping something, I went into msconfig and unclicked a program to start, but it didnt stop it from starting up, I clicked the apply button and everything. One of the programs in the add/remove programs wouldnt uninstall because of the AV deleting, how would I remove this program from the computer without causing serious harm?

had a similar problem but none of the a/v's would run. evenutally resolved in three days.
download Malwarebytes;save it to your DESKTOP but call it something else BEFORE you save it, run in safemode with system restore off, then install and run Trojan Remover, run an online scanner for good measure. don't like messing with the registry but the above work for me.:D
