LAHORE, Pakistan -- Fly a kite in Pakistan and you could get up to six months in jail. Pakistan's Supreme Court voted to extend a ban it imposed in October. As the issue was debated Saturday, kite-makers and enthusiasts rioted outside. Police used batons and tear gas. The kite-flying ban was ordered because some 19 people died during a popular festival last February in the capital, Lahore. They either fell from roofs or were wounded by metal-lined strings. The metal-lined strings are used in kite battles to try to cut each others' lines. Pakistan's Supreme Court plans to revisit the issue Jan. 26, to give the government time to draw up a draft law. A lawyer representing 90 kite manufacturers contends the ban would leave some 100,000 people jobless. I don't know, seems all a bit silly to me, as surely there are better ways to sanction this type of sport than by banning it all-together! They're kites for crying out loud! That's all of it, but have some more fun anyway! Oh wait, forget that thought...
If their kite flying activities are crazy enough to cause NINETEEN DEATHS, then they sure should ban kites.
Some people must be really stupid to actually fly kites on the roofs... If the actually ban people from flying kites on the roofs rather than banning it altogether then all will be merry. You don't see people flying kites on roofs in the UK don't you. Having said that, you don't see people flying kites in the middle of a city :S
