My son was trying to fix a game by following the instructions of a Microsoft rep and in doing so has locked himself out of his Pc.

It comes up with the windows screen with a photo of a stork and the icons but no login.

Tried safe booting using shift and restart and nothing, used my win10 boot disc and nothing helps.

Anyone got a clue what to do, he's panicking a little here.

I forgot to mention he was told to temporarily disable are third party apps in msconfig.

A real Microsoft rep, or "Dave" from Calcutta in the cold calling technical dept on the phone offering to check out the PC ?

Start up in safe mode, open msconfig and uncheck the "safe boot" option.

Forgot to say if you can see the power icon on the login screen hold down the shift key on the keyboard while using the icon to select the restart PC option, Microsoft linky to complete instructions for safe mode in Windows 10

I don't think he can get into safe mode to do that. There seems to be talk of restarting 3 times in a row that gives you options but I'm not sure about that one. If that can give an option of safe mode it does sound like, as Corky suggests, it's the safe boot option that's been ticked and is messing about.

Tried the shift power button restart option like 40 times and it worked just once.

On holiday now so will have to wait, rep told me to make latest win 10 usb which I have done so will try when I get home.

Ok I fixed this by forcing f8 safe boot to be available.

Used my windows 10 usb stick to gain a command prompt and then used the following command.

    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

I could then access safe mode and run msconfig and re enable what my lad had disabled.
