http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11124 http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/08/19/HNmsnlockdown_1.html Microsoft Corp. is making changes to its MSN instant messaging (IM) service that will lock out users of third-party software that uses the service as well as users of older versions of Microsoft's own Messenger client, the company said Tuesday. Users have to upgrade to the latest versions of MSN or Windows Messenger by Oct. 15 or they will no longer be able to log on, Microsoft spokesman Sean Sundwall said. The upgrade is required because of "security issues" with the older versions of the Messenger clients, he said, declining to specify those issues. Besides those older Messenger clients, the move also affects IM software such as Trillian, Imici and Odigo that allow users to consolidate multiple IM accounts in one client, Sundwall said. *n
I'm using MSN 6.0 on trillian right now.. I guess this is somthing they are going to pull the trigger on to turn it off. I love how they are so concerned about "security" on MSN of all things while worms blast holes through a globe's worth of XP systems.
Trillian Pro 2.0 currently supports the same protocols as MSN 6.0 so it should be ok when the time comes - I guess time will tell.
My sister INSISTS on using the stupid MSN client and leaving it on and logged in ALL THE FREAKING TIME! Needless to say, I have had to reaload that computer many times due to worms, viruses, and the such. The last one was a dosey, it disabled virus scanning programs, and removed the ability to copy/paste... She lost a few files with that one I am starting to attempt moving away from the included Microsoft software. I think IE is here to stay, but MWP, MSN, and all those other peices of junk can go away Bunch of bs trying to prevent people from using a decent client, wonder how long it'll take the programmers to find a way around this one?
As long as Microsoft haven't done anything exceedingly sneaky (which is always possible with the Beast) then Trillian 2.0 and GAIM should both have no trouble connecting as they support the latest MSN protocols and can connect securely. Problem for the developers of both is that they have no way to tell whether they've implemented everything correctly till October.
