Given how fierce the battle for shelf space in supermarkets really is, I can only assume that they not only sell but sell well.

Look at it further along the line.

We all know that games, whether PC or console will go down the digital distribution point at some stage.

Companies like Game will pretty much cease to exist and many retailers will suffer big time.

I'm not talking for a while mind, but I can't really see them getting around this one, unless the price war turns to download code prices.

It will happen pretty quickly as soon as one of the big guys jumps on digital downloads at a reduced price. The fact that digital games cost more than box copies at release is the only thing holding the transition back.

I wouldn't even have noticed. It's been years since I bought any physical game, and I think it was for console. A couple of years ago I lived in a place with crappy Sky ADSL at 10-12Mb and that was all there is. I moved out pretty quickly.

Now, we are house hunting and I am driving the wife crazy as I am not moving anywhere that doesn't have Virgin or BT Fibre (ironically, it's always both or none).

    Not this again.

Digital items don't degrade, they are as good as new second hand - this is why physical things are cheaper second hand.

What about if you bought second hand games, but all the textures were downgraded and the multiplayer didn't work properly? Would that be ok?

But it's one game, the disc is sold, owner 1, sells it to owner 2, owner one no longer has the disc. I agree digital items don't degrade (well they do, but that's a different story) so make them cheaper. That's why the second hand market is so strong, the price most people are prepared to pay is less than most rrps. It's a classic case of the market deciding the price.

I'll agree that the one thing holding them back, is price.

I wonder why they charge so much more for a digital download, and keep it at that high price for such a long time?

If they truely wanted people to download more and save a larger portion, I thought they would be more competative.

18 mbps, if it actually worked, would be a Gabensend in my eyes.

Have a 3.5 mbps internet connection. And steam rarely, if ever manages to near that tiny cap. Downloading a game is an all night activity for me, let alone the fact that they're getting bigger and bigger. (MGR:R Was a marathon on it's own for my internet/energy budget)
