well its about time, we did this a few years ago in Nova Scotia. I dont like how they say "or even partially enclosed bus shelters". Its like the person who wrote the article thinks thats going too far. I'm sorry but if its the middle of the winter and the wind is blowing and I am in a shelter to try and stay warm while waiting for a bus, you can take the cancer stick outide and be cold while you kill yourself. /rant over http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/12092007/3/canada-vancouver-set-vote-outdoor-patios-smoking-ban.html Oh, and as far as businesses being affected, I remember when smoking got banned in bars and clubs, all the non smokers came out in droves and business went up! I can see the same thing happening here.
kinda the opposite over here, when the ban came into place all the nightclubs I visit seemed to be quieter. Not that im complaining, I dont smoke, and I love the fact I dont have to queue at the bar for ages to get served Of course this could all be good timing since it was about this time all the students went home, here's to hoping...
Technically no because its still illegal (where i come from anyway). but I am not heartless and if it is a cold day with the wind blowing then sure, why not. It wont take long for the smoke to clear out once they are done.
And therein lies the rub, you'd agree to let them do it, and agree that it's not a problem, yet still it's illegal. Admittedly the police would use their best judgement, but all it takes is an asshat officer on a bad day to arrest someone smoking 5.9m away from a shelter that is later agreed upon to be partially enclosed etc. Seriously, we don't need this much legislation, people will be reasonable with each other and if the police are actually there to do anything about it, they can resolve the matter using their judgement, not a tape measure and a precisely worded document.
I agree with the first two paragraphs but I dont agree that most people can be reasonable. Otherwise people who smoke would not smoke near non smokers. and we would not need all these laws. and since I just opened a can of worms, why should a non smoker leave if someone else wants to smoke? not smoking is not hurting anyone but smoking hurts everyone who comes in contact with it. and yes people should have the right to do what they want to do, but I believe that that right ends when it affects someone else in a negative way. and just to throw it out there, these are only my opinions, I'm not trying to enforce my beliefs on anyone.
Most people not being reasonable was my point; people (chavs, NEDs whatever) will still still disregard the law and light up in a bus shelter next to someone. If they object they'll most likely get an earfull, and the net result won't change. The people anti-social enough to smoke next to someone who objects are the same ones that ignore laws like this.
This must be a cultural difference between where we live because I have seen non-smokers gang up on smokers who smoke where they shouldn't. That’s a rare occurrence of course, but there have been times where someone would light up near me and usually all it takes is one look to make them take the hint and they usually do leave. Speaking of cultural differences, is must be around 3 am in Scotland?
Yeah, 3:30 ATM I'm surprised to hear that though, I'm in Glasgow so there's no shortage of anti-social idiots that care about no-one than themselves; I'd assumed it was the same the world over to some extent. We all joke about Canada being America's smarter brother, is it really that nice
there are some parts of canada that aren't all that nice. Just like anywhere else. but its pretty rare to find someone who has been to canada and has something bad to say about the people here. and I have never met someone who had something bad to say about people from the east coast. it still has its share of problems, but again, show me a place that doesn't. anyway, maybe you aren't going to bed, but I am. Damm getting up early.
So what your saying is that I don't have the right to blow smoke on you in a public place? Hey man, it's a public place, that means it's free to everyone! That means I can can and should be able to blow my smoke on you if I want. You people should stop trying to push your backwards beliefs on others.
A few years ago, a buddy of mine - never touched a cigarette or even came near a smoker in his life - accidently caught a whiff of second-hand smoke (outside). Five years later, bam, HIV. In other words, it's the most dangerous thing evarr and we must execute all smokers. Thank God that the WHO started focussing its resources on anti-smoking campaigns as opposed to trying to improve the health/conditions in countries that could really quite use it - everyone's so much better off now! Except my buddy. He's dead. Why don't we ban trucks as well, then? Stepping in front of one really hurts, too. Speaking of hurt, I am still waiting for the first death certificate that says "smoking" or even "second-hand smoke" on it. (Enough certificates about trucks, though.)
this again.... Damn right you don't! You can do it, but just because its a public place, it doesn't make it your 'right'! If you did that to me, your going to get an earful. That's not my right either. I don't have the right to shout at you just because its a public place, but if you blow smoke in my face, I'm going to! And how the **** is anti smoking backward thinking? It's bad for you. End off. Getting rid of it around people who don't smoke is not backwards. Perhaps banning it altogether would be backwards. I am of the belief if someone wants to do something to themselves which has no effect on others they should be free to do it. This does not include blowing smoke in my face!
All the smokers went outside on the patio, I'd guess, or near the entrances to such places. If they aren't even allowed out there anymore then it's obvious business will take a dive. The statistics that showed that most smokers would rather give up, given the chance - I wonder how many of them actually meant it rather than just replying so because 'it's the sensible thing to say'.
Thats what everyone said when they first did it back where I used to live. Its going to hurt our business! Well, guess what? All the people who never went out because they didn't want to be exposed to smoke, went out. and business went up. Like I said before, the bars and clubs became so crowded that you could not move. and it was so nice to be able to go home at night and not smell like an ashtray. Oh, and as far as someone having a right to blow smoke in my face, if thats the case, then I must also have a right to plant my fist in yours. Dont like that do you? find it offensive dont you? Of course you do, who wouldn't? and of course I dont have the right to punch someone, but neither do you have the right to blow smoke in my face.
my opinion is that they should either ban it completly or let it be... no stupid in between things....
cant believe i forgot that.. lol personally i'd be for a ban... was hard enough to quit with that s**t
