I have an non backlit lcd

Think its a nanox NDM204 with a Sanyo LC7985NA controller (and another chip hd66100f).

I have been told it wires same as a hd44780.

What I need to know is if its not backlit do I need to wire the backlit power? And if its not backlit why are they there?

you shouldn't need to wire up the backlight's + and - (or A and K, or power and ground, or whatever you want to call them). It's on a different circuit from the LCD electronics.

when you say it works with a test signal, what sort of signal are you giving it?
