hi everybody! i had some sparetime today and took apart my old intel 200mmx system! : ) thought i could do my first mod on it... already got some ideas! want to turn it in a freeBSD router... lol till now it was an old viper AT bigtower with 6 5,25" slots an 2 3,5" slots. planned to cut it in the half of hight. nice window with bsd deamon... red light and black paint. questions: - is it possible only to use a heatsink without a fan on a p200mmx? (its a big akasa silvermountain lying around...) - does a 200W AT PS need a fan? or is it "safe" to run it without? because it will stay in my bedroom it should be as silent as possible... thx LYRIC tha "dremel noob" : )
I wouldnt imagine that P200 gives out much heat, so if you have a decent enough airflow through the case you should be alright without a fan. EDIT: I think I read somewhere that 24cfm was the lowest sane airflow for a PSU. You might be able to go a little lower than that as its only a 200watt, but there are plenty of near silent fans at 24cfm around.
i doubt you would be able to run the psu without a fan but you could always replace it with a silent one and welcome to the forums
thx guys! guess ill just try what happens when i run the cpu without a fan.... for the ps i dont feel good by removing the fan either. i only thougt becaus its just 200W and there is only a hd, cd-rom, floppy and graca mounted. the old asus tx97-e looks nice anyway: 4 pci slots and 3 isas lol just hope ill get the hole thing runnin : )
Never put a probe to it, but I remember the P200MMX getting quite hot - certainly hot enough that you wouldn't want to touch it. Despite that, I think the Silver Mountain might just do, because of it's large size.
Water cool it? That'd ensure both quiet running, and it not boiling over and becoming a black keychain. Being only a p200 you could probablt get by with a small watercooling rig, smaller rad, quiet fan for the rad, and you probably wouldn't need a huge god awful waterblock and such. Although that might be mroe than you want to put into it. Otherwise, the heatsink should be alright, but if you want a silent machine and such, you'll need some kind case fans to pass air over the heatsink, or a fan on the heatsink and only one or no case fans. Without airflow of some sort, a heatsink is pretty useless after the first ten minutes of running. With that said, getting a small quiet fan would be plenty to pass air into the case, and then use the PSU fan to exhaust it. Just my two dimes. That's right, dimes.
watercooling would be nice, but i just dont have the money by now... and for p200 it seems too much effort! : ) anyway, its not so easy to get the parts in switzerland anyway... so i thougt of a case fan instead of the heatsinkfan, because the cpu is placed right in front of the airintake it should work fine (i hope)! today i cutted up the case! its now just half the size! (sorry, got no digicam for pics till now...) but the case will still take a lot of work, have to reassemble it! cut the frontplate... or do one myself, maybe alu... or acryl... hmm, ill see =) for my first mod its already a lot of work... but its fun!!! im open for any other advises! thx LYRIC

I have successfully passive cooled p200 MMXs many times with a rather pathetic heatsink (compared to your akasa). Many OEM computers have passively cooled p200s so you won't have any problems there. I have an AT PSU with a temp controlled fan which makes it literally silent, and I use freesco from a floppy so I don't have any hard drive noise which is usually the loudest thing in a box of that age. Sorry if that is a little incoherant I'm reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllly tired.
taking the fan off is a bad idea in my humble opinion....but it might work....cant be good for it thoguh.....
You can't just take the fan off a normal HSF even with a p200. You need a suitably large heatsink, wimbo is selling some which are perfect examples in the fs/wanted forum.
