You say you have admin access? I'd hope that's local admin access - which means you should be able to log on under that account. Are you getting the ctrl+alt+del login screen or the welcome screen?

As far as I'm aware none of these types of tools "get" the admin password, they overwrite, it so I may be wrong.

Even if they did, he needs a Domain Administrator account, not a local administrator!!
What I'm guessing happened is that his local credentials were wiped out, OR its trying to logon to DOMAIN\username instead of LOCAL\username. Either way it I reckon that a domain user given local permissions is still referred to by their domain SID, which won't be verifiable after parting a domain.

Back to the OP - best way to weasel out of it is "errr dunno how this happened but I left my GF browse the internet on my laptop and now I can't log on anymore" then take the mickey out of women for being useless (sorry ladies I know there's a good chunk of ladies who know more than men, but a lot of desktop support admins are male chauvinists) and say you won't let her do it again!

If they wonder why VNC etc are disabled then just say "well they weren't before she used it" ...??

Ah the "my girlfriend/partner/spouse did it" excuse. We see this sooo often. :hehe:

Just take it in, say it doesn't work anymore and plead ignorance.

There are women watching this thread. Well, one with mod-powahs anyway. Be warned :nono:

OT: Definitely just tell them the truth as far as the domain part is concerned, don't mention the other stuff unless they ask. I am also amazed you have admin rights, we never gave those to any users because users can't be trusted (as your thread shows)! :D

The support guys will likely make fun of you behind your back for a while, but as long as you don't try to over-explain anything (they'll know you're making it up if you do) it should be fine. We used to get people finding ways to disable stuff and we'd just re-enable them and if it happened more than once they'd get a warning and any more times they'd get a lovely restricted profile set from AD and would have to raise a call with us every time they wanted anything done. Programmers were the absolute worst for this

Noooo! All you know about is your little programming thing and you break everything else and can't be trusted! (I'm allowed to make stereotypes in this thread because you all started it ^).

Seriously though the floor of programmers at my last job was a nightmare, I hated having to go up and fix their stuff. Most of the time they were running around sticking post-its on each other or flicking paperclips around with elastic bands. It was like being back at school! Every time I went up there they'd start quizzing me on ways to prank each other. No wonder all of our systems had major flaws... I was so pleased I got out of the system test group and into the support side.

Breaking and fixing is how we learn, you know this! :p

I've never worked as a programmer 'in an office' so to speak, only ever on academic work or research contracts from home; so I'll just have to take your word for it. :hehe:

If the IT people give you a hard time for it, tell them to learn their jobs properly and lock stuff like that down with proper user policies.

You jammy bugger. I can't even open up the damned system time settings to see a calendar - our user policies are that restrictive. Go off to IT, cap in hand, and just explain what happened. Your other half was poking about with it, you genuinely don't know what she did, and now it doesn't work properly... If you do get hassle, well, you're new and you still don't know all the rules & policies properly. People will respect you more for being honest, even if it does mean they'll take the piss out of you ;).

Unfortunately that wouldn't hold water in our place, as I know the rules too well. Our IT policies are extremely strict; even letting someone else use your computer when you're logged in is grounds for a serious disciplinary - let alone allowing the other half to get near it... Though if I took my IT equipment home, they'd fire me for theft and call the police - I'm not important enough to get a laptop ;).

Aye, of all the desktops and laptops I've set up to connect to our parent company's domain, none of them have local admin access. Even the MD. It's a ballache having to support them as they can't install anything or add a local printer.

Thankyou everybody, cant believe how many of you responded.
Woohoo. sorted. The IT guy was showing off at how quick he did it and didn't even ask questions.
I only need local admin rights and do not want domain or network admin rights as the consequences could be grave. Without computer systems working we can't sell any product. So i understand the importance of this.
I also found out it isn't my GF's fault. I dont log onto the company network from one month to the next. I stick to the control network.
We have a policy to stop old computers from getting on the network after four weeks. It automatically dropped me from the domain.
Does anybody think i should dig her up,,,,,,, i mean nip down stairs and tell her. ( a joke before anyone starts phoning the police, see soviets post)
    NAH

@HEX, yes we are tinkers (programmers), we like to think we know what were doing but then when it all goes wrong we do actually have an amazing sidestep and pass back technique.

Printers were always the pain in my office too. As there were only about 5 of us supporting thousands of users all over the country including a lot of home-workers we used to script our installs/uninstalls, etc. and push them out from a server But bloody printers always wanted to be plugged in at certain times during the installs so we'd have to get the people in an office and on the phone or, preferably, into our office to install them. Such a pain...

Damn you tinkerers :p Glad it was all painless and not your poor girlfriend's fault after all!
