ive got two dead one! please please! think of ooor insignificant me! oh and i can pay through paypal! pizzaeatnmonkey@mchsi.com
The displays all have quick blow fuses in them, if your displays really are dead then it's probably just the fuse... Noritake will normally change the fuse for free for you Rob.
Any idea what the fuze rating is??? I have bypassed my fuze, and was thinking about putting a changable fuze wired in it's place... If I knew what rating the fuze had, I could make this easier... Right now I am using a single strand of wire from a hd cable... Probably fuzed at about 2 A with that in there... I need to protect it better... But it works nice... (I know , fuze is really spelled fuse..but what the heck, if people can use "teh suxor" for that sucks, I guess I am allowed some clearance on this one)
i have bipassed the fuses. they still do nothing. I spent 4 and a half hours last night screwing with these things. I guess I'm just a freak. So noritake will screw with these for free, eh? I might just get in contact with them. I think there is a chicago office... I used some off that pcb you can buy at radio shack. it had traces running the entire length of it linig up with all the holes, so i scaped all of those off. then i mad my own connections that lined up with the VFD ones, and then puta molex connector on it, and a femal parallel port on it. so that i could use standard things to quick connect to the displays. it turns out my molex got witch around the first time i used this method, and i sent 5v into the ground and ground the 5v. i reversed the power basically. so did this kill my displays, or just the fuse. cuz right now i have some wire taped down across the fuse and they still d nothing.
ok, i won 2 on ebay, but i am curious about the dimensions, if anyone could post them, that would be great!
The only important dimension is that it'll fit nicely in two 5.25" bays Download the datasheet to get the exact dimensions... Welcome to the boards, Rob.
Welcome to the boards, tomd. I have the dimensions and other trivia posted in the first post of the technical thread, along with links to the datasheets and to software that supports this display.
hey guys, i posted a summary of some of the info minus the detailed datasheets over on my page... http://flecom.net/[H]OCP/vfd.html also whipped up a little schematic for the wiring i (and some other people?) are using over here if you guys are going to do a write up on the site - feel free to use it working with Yarviech to get a LCDStudio plugin up and running so we can get something besides winamp on these absolutely beautiful displays!
Unfortunatly I did not win one of these at the auction ; ( so if anyone has one they will sell me it would be greatly appreciated. Please email me at s0aring3@aol.com. Thank you, Greg
I'm really sorry to post in this thread, but I can't seem to PM this guy, and I know how to get the BGMicro VFD powered and controled by USB. I'm doing it ATM. BlackFlux, e-mail me at imdefrag@yahoo.com if you still need help with your BG Micro displays. I also have one of these noritake VFD's comming my way after auction #2. I can't wait for it to get here!
Yahoo returned a user not known error on your email addy... mind sharing how you are wiring the BG Micro VFD over the USB port?
the BGMicro VFD is just a serial VFD... so any USB>Serial converter will work since they just emulate a COM port... unline USB>Parallel converters that use propriatary(sp) drivers that do not emulate an LPT port and therefore are essentially useless when it comes to displays... there are however some projects for making USB graphical LCD's based i think either on the Toshiba or SED controllers, and on the Hard|Forums SkyLab made one for HD44780 displays, but kept everything about it secret so i am not sure if modifications would be possible
sorry about that, I made a typo it's iamdefrag@yahoo.com I bought a USB->serial adapter, however I took it apart and did some moddin'. like the one found here: http://www.directron.com/ra15sc.html I opened the housing, and desoldered all the wires. I attached one wire to the +5V from the USB side, and another to the ground. A third wire was soldered back to the serial pin that sends data. That way I draw my power from the USB port (deemed safe by several plps and I've never had an issue with it). it works like a charm!
Um, techguy, we are having a thread here about the Noritake VFD. If you want to talk about interfacing that, then no, USB-> parallel is not viable. At all. If you want to talk about another display, then feel free to open another thread on that topic. Preferably in Electronics forum. I'll offer this small advice: consider the software first. If it is written to address the parallel port, it's not likely that writing to a USB virtual COM port is going to work. And vice versa. And this samll advice: Before you try to power the Noritake display from USB, look at its current drain.
Hey, sorry about that. I was trying to help the guy with the BG Micro. As for the USB to LPT, that was to try and drive the noritake. I have an ABIT IT7 MAX2 which has no LPT or COM ports, so I'm trying to figure out how to run this VFD I bought. The BGMicro runs using the serial -> usb adapter. To wondows, it lists it as a USB device AND a under ports as COM2 (it can be changed). I figured that a USB->LPT cable would also do the same thing... I wasn't going to power the noritake VFD like the BGmicro as it draws like 300mA more than the BG one. So, any ideas on how a "legacy free" mobo can run this VFD? Thanks and sorry for the slight de-railing of the topic.
Well crap. I found out why I haven't gotten my VFD's yet, sort of. I contacted the guy and he sent me my tracking number - here's the good part - it was (supposedly) delivered. It says in the UPS tracking thingie it was delivered on 1-14-03 and placed on my porch. Umm.. for every package I've ever gotten from UPS, I needed to either pick it up in person or sign a little sticky-note authorizing them to open my gate and leave it on the deck. They didn't do this. It seems a little fishy to me on UPSes part.. So what do I do now? I know he shipped, I know UPS had the package because I can see all the places they tracked it to my house, but WHERE IS IT? I don't care about the money I spent on them, I want my 2 displays!
