Just got hold of a Noritake 7000 (140x32) VFD display. Wondering if anyone here can give me a few pointers on setting it up to work with LCDC. I posted in their forums and got pointed over here (specifically the Noritake thread). I glanced over most of the 50 odd pages and haven't seen anything regarding the 7000 series specifically. I have done searches but turned up nothing.

I shouldn't imagine it being too much different from the 800 ones. I think I gotta go and write a config file now. It works under Hyperterminal but I can't get ANYTHING under Test mode in LCDC.

    Little Help?

    (hello from Oz)

I worked out my display. For some reason it was the join pins 8 & 4 together fix. My display didn't display the symptoms but I tried it anyway. AND IT WORKS!

Maybe it has something to do with the fact it is a newer display with a higher baud rate. It goes up to 115kbps. I haven't tested it at that speed yet (only need to change a jumper ;-). What I gotta do now is go through the command set making an LCDC definition file. Damn that is tedious. I'm no good at converting Hex to Decimal in my head so it's to the calculator for just about every hex code. When I get a working definition file I will put it up on the web with a few example displays.

We tried to order the display featured in the bit-tech articles but they are more expensive than the 7000 series which are newer and have more features. Like the window feature. You can split the display up in to seperate windows that can be controlled seperately. And the standard baudrate is 33.6kbps.

Glad you got it to work. I'll be going for a USB LCD myself, probably (I'm just a lazy ass :cooldude:), but I think those ideosyncratic bits of information like this are really valuable. It's what modding forums are all about!

I'm not done yet. I can get a one line clock to work :D. But thats simple stuff.

Gotta work out the LCDC definition file markup. Also, the CursorTo command for my display requires 4 parameters which I thought was quite odd. I haven't had enough time to fiddle with LCDC enough. Going to work on it tonight (remember I'm in Oz and its Wed, 10.27am).

I want to get some simple displays up first like, a big clock, CPU temp and MB temp. Then on to things like the really small system summary.

Custom graphics stuff is going to be the fun part.

The really annoying bit is that my bro bought one as well (live with him) and he has done nothing except for wire his up. I'm going to all the effort to get this bugger working and he is going to have it easy. I don't mind helping people out but this is just lazyness.</rant>

thouh they arent nearly as good as LCDC, just that nobody wants to tackle the task for an 800 series

After browsing the documentation for my 7000 series, I have learned I can't use small fonts :grr:.

But the coolest thing would have to be the user-definable windows. You can set up to 4 seperate windows to control independantly . I hope I can get those to work in LCDC. It also has a 'hidden' area. Haven't thought of a use for that yet.

Now if only I could work out this 'high byte' and 'low byte' thing for moving the cursor around. Does LCDC do that?

10 posts in this thread and you still haven't posted any pictures? I should ban your ass ;)

Heh more seriously, nice work. The 7000 series is a lot more similar to the noritake displays I reviewed than the 800 (which is really quite different).

I'm not sure quite what you mean in your question, but lcdc lets you send any combination of bytes you like ([##x] where x is the ascii car value of the ocde you what to send in decimal) - so you should be able to do everything the 7000 series' command set allows.

On the displays I review it was [##16][##x][##y] to cursor to x,y I think :)

Cheers, good to see you on the boards (and despite your name I hope you stay around for more than vfd's),

    Rob.

Does anyone have any guidance? I have the 7002 which is serial and paralell. Which should I go for?
