Electronics Noritke VFD help needed

    Hi All,

    I know there is already a non-technical and also a technical thread for the noritake VFD's, but I didn't think anyone would read new meassages posted in those forums. Hope you don't mind.

    I've tried wiring the VFD using the wiring diagram on the technical thread, and I think it's all ok. Only thing is nothing happens! I've got liquid MP3 setup and DLport IO installed, there's 5v running to the VFD, but nothing displays on screen.

    Unfortunately I can't seem to find my multi-meter, so I've had checked that there's a voltage by using an old fan connected to the 3 pin power connector on the display and using the 5v lead as a probe. I've found that the fan spins when connected to the right side of resistor 37, but not on the left. Also it dosen't spin when on the left of R36, but it does on the right, It also lights for a second, so the display itself is ok.

    should the display show anything when power is connected, even if the plugin isn't running?

    where do i connect all the grounds for the LPT and Noritake display? Currently I have them all wired together and have grounded them using the ground on the molex.

    My cable is currently wired like this:

    (I'm using 2 Male 25 D-way plugs, as the main wiring cable, as I have a 26 pin female (IDE Type) connector to a female LPT 25 D-way (the old parallel cable that you used to have to plugin in to motherboards).

    I think the wiring is ok, but will try wring it up again, is there any way just to test the unit without connecting up all the wires?

    Turn it on in a dark room, can you see the little wires running across the display glowing? If not then the display isn't getting power or is bust - it's very common for a quick blow fuse to blow on the back of the display.

    thanks cheese for reply so quickly.

    I have checked that the wires glow and they do (an orange colour).

    I have also bypassed the fuse with 5amp fuse wire, as I accidently put 5V to gnd and gnd to 5v. (D'oh).

    I have just tested the fuse wire with a multimeter, and it's ok. There's also no problems with the resistors that i mentioned before. I think i was being paranoid!

    Is a good recipe for popping the displays controller I'm afraid... the display shouldn't do anything until you send data to it though, somake sure your wiring it ok (for the 17th times I'm sure!).

    Ok, I checked the wiring and although it was ok, I found that the old motherboard to LPT port connector was wired as follows:

    PHP:
    1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 25
      2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24
    As opposed to:
    PHP:
       1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13
    14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24
    I have changed my wiring accordingly but it still doesn't work. The grounds are all going to the pins 18-25 on the parallel port.

    anyone got a spare cable pre-wired for the noritake 800 display that I could buy? Just to make sure it's not my wiring. I'm not sure if the display is working, but I want to be sure.
