    As above really.

is it a good idea to play the original or director's cut versions first, or skip 'em and jump straight to Assassin's Creed 2?

I feel a Steam sale coming on soon, so I may wait to see which gets reduced first.

compared to 2 i found it very boring doing the same things over and over. but i would suggest doing it for the story as they do link together a little and it helps when you play 2.

2 is a huge improvement to 1 so if your not a fan of one don't let it put you off

I'm inclined to say yes. I haven't played the second and without the benefit of comparison I quite enjoyed AC1.

It does get repetitive eventually with the side-quests but not so much that it had outworn its welcome before I finished the game. I completed it a second time a few months later without feeling completely put off by the repetitive side-quests.

The story is good. It has clichéd premises, but I think the delivery is good and it has some original spins on the situation; plus if you plan to play the second one eventually I think you're likely to enjoy it more with the benefit of the plot from the first.
People always tell me "You don't need to have seen/played the first one!" with regards to movies and plot continuity and most of the time I think they're completely wrong on that count. If you care about the story, play the first game first.

I have no idea about the director's cut version, I didn't even know there was one. :p

I haven't played the original but I'm actually in the process of playing through AC2...

The game itself is ok, but I can only muster the encourage to play it in small chunks at the moment as it is a bit repetitive.

Its also a blatent console port as the controls are horrible and can sometimes be frustrating.

Its still worth a look though, as it can be a bit of fun running round on roofs and stabbing people!

I'd say yes as I loved all the hard work that went into the story and tying it all in to actual historical events. Very, very clever. I think you'd miss some of that if you skip it and go straight to 2.

Yes 2 is a lot better though. I honestly can't say the repetitive nature in AC1 bothered me all that much. I can see why some didn't like it, but it didn't stop me finishing it.

Running about across the rooftops lobbing knives in guard's backs is stupidly good fun :)

I thought 1 was too repetitive couldn't bring myself to finish it but 2 is a much better game although a bit to easy.

I'm waiting for the brotherhood to be released next march.

    I would say no.

I found the game to be boring and tedious. Most of AC just felt like a tutorial.

I'm in agreement that the first one is very repetitive however, I feel that you wouldn't fully understand the story if you just started playing the second...

They are also one of few games that are better played on console than PC.

It is a bit repetitive but I found the 1st game to be enjoyable. I'd say with the second game they tried too hard.

PC & 360 pad Cheesecake :thumb:

I played some of 1 on my friends PS3 but it was a halfway through save and I died a lot. Had a chance to buy 2 cheap for the PC a month or two ago so I just went for it, awesome game. Plays awesome with a pad and the locations are amazing!

I really really enjoyed the original Assassin's Creed. I picked it up for a tenner in a local computer shop, and played with a 360 pad. It's not a game I hugely enjoyed on a keyboard and mouse, and it's a proud console port. Looking forward to getting the second one when my rig is up and running. There is an element of repetition, but when the content is fun as I found it, it didn't bore me.

I went for 100% completion first run. Very enjoyable.

If it's cheap then go ahead and get it. It is a good game, despite the repetitiveness and the horrific ending is very frustrating ( the combat system was not designed to fight tens of guys, and this is what they have you do ).

That reminds me... I forgot to mention the dreadful camera in AC2 - sometimes when fighting a group of guards the camera would be staring at the wall and I would lose 1/2 my health. Luckily it is rather easy though so it wasn't a huge issue.

    This ^^

There are a few important elements in the story that you need to be aware of to fully understand the story arc of the sequel. :thumb:

    Story arc Shmory arc.
Yes, they tried to link the stories toegether, and did so quite well at times.
Yes, that's why you should play AC and then AC2.

AC2 is better, except in feel.
I am busy playing it now, and I find the Americanised Italian accents annoying, the world not as "complete" and the animations not as smooth (when freeclimbing) as in the first one. It seems as if they polished the first one more, then plonked down a new world, added a few things, and shipped it.

I would skip the original TBH, too slow. The second, however, is a damn fine game!

I got about 80% of the way through the first one and just got bored and stopped. I've come back to it about 5 times with the intention to "just finish it off", played for about 5 mins and then dropped it again. Heard good things about the second one but refusing to buy it until I finish the first.
