This summer I'm going on a trip with my brother and the car that will take a 10 hour drive. I want to bring my laptop, but it "only" has a battery life expectancy of 6 hours (using a normal and a double battery).

So, I want to buy a car-adapter thingy to power the laptop through the cigarette lighter. I have a few questions about that though: how safe is it? I can imagine that a laptop needs a quality feed of 12v (or whatever it needs) and I don't think power from a car is without spikes and all that. I'm sure the adapter will cover this, but can I really trust my expensive toy with that? What is the load on the car? Will it require more fuel, like the way AC requires more fuel (albeit a relatively small amount)? Can I keep my latop plugged-in all the time, without being worried of draining the car-battery?

Any recommendations on a brand or something, or can I just buy the cheapest one on eBay?
