I used to travel £140 miles a day for work, cost me £30 a day in fuel (47.6280 USD at todays exchange rates). Every persons circumstances are different but for every day use i bet the average american travels about the same distance in the car as the average european (i.e. the commute to work which was still 25 miles for me one way after a position closer to me opened up), and maybe a school run / gym / shopping (groceries as you would say). Admittedly for an all american road trip you can potentially drive a lot of miles but thats not a necessity (although something i wouldn't mind experiencing one day).

Yes i admit i didn't drive a big petrol hungry car, but there is no way I could use public transport to get me to work. Admittedly before i learned to drive i used to use public transport to get to a job in the same town my current one is 25 miles away. It used to take me 2.5hours and i had to change buses twice (where driving took 30 mins) as theres no trains near me and the bus services are poor.

Anyway rant over just woke up and not being anti-american but when i see people complaining about fuel prices i can only dream of, and would regard as cheap as the first thing i see when i wake up, it annoys me to say the least.

True, on two accounts. We probably have more roads, but less distance to cover.
However, the U.S. allowed cars to replace and even destroy their public transport systems.
Cheap domestic fuel made it possible to drive large cars and a trend to buy larger cars because they are "safer" made it even worse.
As to not having fuel-efficient diesels, you have the large car manufacturers to thank for that. It is near impossible to import a diesel because they have to adhere to much stricter emission standards.
The U.S. made some choices in their history that gave them a very large competitive advantage to the rest of the world, but at the same time it is now turning into a burden.

Just to illustrate the difference in cost:
A car that does 10Km/L is considered not very fuel efficient (23.52M/Gal)
Most mid-range cars do 20Km/L (47M/gal) a Toyota Auris for example.
Compacts are about 25KM/L (58M/gal) a Toyota Aygo.

Depending on the country we do however pay a lot more for our cars.
Here in NL a Ford Focus has a catalog price of €12.878, but with all the added taxes (Vehicle tax + 19% state tax) it becomes €18.745,-
Compare that to the $18.300 starting price in the U.S.
That is a 28% difference in price, not counting the yearly road tax (€704 for petrol, €1334 for diesel for just owning the car), fuel prices and parking costs.

Love the country and it's people, but complaining about fuel prices while they are pretty cheap relative to Europe is just annoying.
I do have the advantage of public transport. Hell, the nearest large city Rotterdam > The Hague is only 25Km away and is almost faster by public transport that by car. Those 25Km can take almost an hour with traffic-jams.

It's a religion of peace but that doesn't mean I'm have to be peaceful also the outfit she is wearing is not an Islamic outfit even I find It over the top, just the other day I had an argument with a woman wearing that trying to drive
