RE: point #8 - There would be a whole lot less conflict due to religion and Christianity if people stopped oppressing those who choose to follow a religion or live their life believing in something. There's a difference between atheism and sectarianism. The "Godbusters" Facebook page is nothing but a disgraceful amount of the latter, with a sprinking of the former thrown in to make it "legit" enough not to be removed.

As a Christian, I can deal with atheism. If you choose not to believe in anything, I won't argue about it or try to force something on you that you don't want to hear. I've tried in the past and it got me nowhere, so I have taken the view that people can believe what they want or believe in nothing at all, and it's not my place to even have an opinion about that. Where I and everyone else should draw the line though, is at bigotry and sectarianism. Neither is or should be acceptable to anyone, whether you believe in something or choose to believe in nothing. Having grown up in a country just missing the worst of a 30 year conflict which was based largely on sectarianism, I have a very strong aversion to it and anything which closely resembles it.

 

You cannot compare religious conflicts to car crashes.

My point was exactly what I said, religion causes nearly all of the sectarian wars, if there was no religion then you would have less sectarian conflicts with no adverse affects on anything else.

 

Religion does not cause sectarian wars, that's the complete wrong way to look at it. Sectarianism causes religious wars. Sectarianism is hatred of another person's religious beliefs, so hatred causes the conflicts you're talking about. Thinking that someones desire or choice to believe in something causes wars is totally irrational.

 

Unwavering irrational belief in something causes sectarian wars, most of these are unwavering irrational belief in a religion.

 

Religious debate (albeit a very civil one) in the demote thread makes me demote.
These kind of arguments are fine at the right time and place, but this is a thread for silly pictures of cats, stupid people doing stupid things and other weird or funny stuff, so go argue elsewhere please.

 

Guessing this thread is going the way of the previous one then :/

I'm not going to take the discussion any further, but it's safe to say I'd appreciate it if religion bashing (i.e. bigotry and sectarianism) were kept out of the thread. It's extremely offensive
