I'm not really sure what this is saying. Can somebody explain it to me?

I know that Apple-bashing is very fashionable on PC-centric boards such as this, but could someone explain what, apart from the price, makes the new Mac Pro laughable?

I just had a gander at the site, and came away very, very impressed. The packaging and thermal management are revolutionary, no?

The way I see it, Apple is a lot like Dyson. Sure, you could get the job done for a lot less with something less fancy but the products are indeed damn good.

I think it probably stems from the (possibly outdated) concept that Apple hardware and software is more limiting that the open platform that is PC. The reality though is that Windows is just as closed and limiting, it has just enjoyed a few decades as the more popular choice so has always had much more support from developers.

Apple have gained ground here of course, but I'd suggest that non "lifestyle" users like PC nerds probably don't get the philosophy behind Apple products. There are also plenty of power users for whom Apple has been the logical choice for years, although in reality there is little to differentiate Apple and PC in terms of productivity potential these days.

Depends how you look at it. People usually say Macbooks are quiet. Well, they are and are not. In idle you can make pretty much any current computer run at quiet or passively. But under load, the computers are noisy - and that includes pretty much all Apple computers. Some more, some less - Macbook Pro 13" 2011 was very noticeable and once you put any load on the CPU (more than idling, for example you started browsing web), the fan kicked in and was usually loud, compared to my usual desktop computers.

Now let's take a look at this new Mac Pro, and just think about it. It has probably one 16cm radial fan, one Xeon E5-16x0 with 130 W TDP, and two Firepro W9000's - each with 274W TDP. So with full load (video encoding, 3D rendering, which is probably what these computers will be used most of the time) we talk about 678W TDP, cooled by single fan and a triangle heatsink, with a cooling capacity of an average mainstream air cooler. Sorry, the "thermal management" will probably be horrible, and this thing will run hot, hot, hot (and noisy, very noisy).

Let's not forget: The origingal iMac G5 had A: a CPU fan that was exceptionally noisy under load, B: actually had cases of "shutoff on CPU overheat" happening, C: actually had a copper heatsink!

I'd know these things, because I had an original iMac G5. Had, because the heat killed the GPU. Can't imagine the heat output of an i7 and 2 GPUs on one heatsink that's about the same size as an iMac G5 heatsink...

It IS revolutionary, tip it on it's side and see what happens!

PS, the picture forgot that it looks like a tea urn.

I am a longtime, committed PC enthusiast. I have built more rigs than I have fingers and toes. There are also three MacBooks in my house (one mid-2011 15-inch pro and two mid-2012 13-inch pros).

I use my 15-er for ALL my work (Lightroom & Photoshop, 24/7) and the only time the fan spins up is when I export a large batch of photos (>100). I have had 3 notebooks before the MacBook - a Dell XPS 15, HP-something-or-other and Sony Vaio Z - and I would not trade the MacBook for them or any of their ilk. The Dell ran permanently hot and the fan was always on (but mercifully not too loud). The HP ran silently, but unfortunately could not keep from overheating and would get physically painful to work on after more than an hour or two. The Sony was the best of the lot, but not by much, because it ran cool and was snappy, but the fan sounded like a jetliner hitting TOGA thrust.

My sister and mother use their 13-ers for nothing more strenuous than browsing and the odd HD movie/TV show and I have heard no noise or heat related complaints from either. And believe me, if there were complaints, I would get an earful.

You have valid concerns. Apple has indeed dropped the ball on hardware a fair few times in the past. However, their present QC and emphasis on ergonomics and usability is so solid, I do not think they'd release anything for sale without torture testing the dickens out of it first. The Mac Pro certainly does look like trouble waiting to hit the proverbial fan (heh) but if it actually does, I will be surprised.

Look at it this way - the PC market (and yes, Macs count) has become more competitive than ever thanks in large part to Apple spearheading the tablet revolution. Apple has to earn their place in the premium segment and they do that by innovating. In the past 5-odd years, they have pumped enormous amounts of time and money into cooler-running chips and highly efficient batteries. They may not be shipping the volumes that other manufacturers manage, but there's no question that people are playing catch-up on a host of premium features that debut on MacBooks (single-piece trackpad, multi-touch trackpad, chicklet keyboards, long battery life, better build quality etc). Long story short, I wouldn't be surprised if they managed the same thing with thermals.

I'm pretty sure I saw something like that in either Tottenham or York.

Neither seem particularly sensical, mind you.

That. If I could afford something Mac at this point, I would surely want to. I also come away quite impressed by the Mac Pro, but I think with the claims being made on things like the cooling potential in such a case, we're going to have to wait for tests or reviews. Either way, it's an incredible little piece of engineering, and I'd be happy to have a Macbook, or definitely a Mac monitor, sitting on my desk!

And that is the most succinct report of E3 I have seen to date. :thumb:
