What I always wonder with these demonstrations is if people are that proud of their convictions that they feel the need to form into mobs to protest about something then why do they also feel the need to hide their faces?

Surely if your belief that you are right is something that is held that strongly you would be proud to stand up and be counted...

 

I suspect that for some it's part of the costume, and for others it's in the expectation, or perhaps hope, that it will turn violent. Wearing a mask to a rally is like bringing a condom on a first date. They both express a hope that something messy, fun, and possibly destructive might happen.

They fear government or occupational discrimination. Given the way things operate in this country, they're right to.

 

Makeshift drum I suspect. They're quite noisy when you drop them.

It's down to the way the police operates. In the UK, Forward Intelligence Teams take photos of people at protests, put them in a database, try to identify protesters (especially regular attendees). If things turn violent, you're guilty just for having been at the demo. Photos allow the police time to track down protesters (even the non-violent ones) after the event. It's chillingly Orwellian.

It's not just the cops, either. Neo-Nazis keep databases of people attending anti-fascist rallies (see Redwatch for an example). Your photo in the papaer at an LGBT event could have serious consequences if you're a member of certain religious communities. What if your boss sees you out on an anti-capitalist march?

TL;DR there's plenty of reasons to hide your face at a demo.
