Actually, read the comments on that piece. The biggest problem was not really keeping them in for 6 months, but the fact that she also kept them in while swimming. That's how she contacted the amoeba.

People who had similar problems kept them in while in a hot tub or rinsed the box with tap water and didn't let it dry out properly.

The other issue I'm sure she has is corneal neovascularization, or the formation of new blood vessels into the cornea. Your eyes need to breathe a little bit. Long term wear contacts are better, but still not as good as glasses, or just taking your contacts out each night.

I always get the contacts you can leave in for a week then throw out, but taken them out daily. I've also had issues with corneal neovascularization in the past.

You gotta protect your eyes! Don't take your sense of sight for granted.

If I ever have to make the choice I'd definitely go with glasses though!

Glasses are perfect for those of us squeamish about touching our eyes.

The only way I could ever see myself having contacts is if I wanted to get those ones that change the colour of your eye or something. :p

    O2 Optix Cheesecake!

Been wearing these for 7 years now and regularly leave them in for several days at a time, no discomfort at all. 6 months, however, is suicidal.

About 19 years ago I had a pair I left in for about 6 months (because I was very stupid). They were lenses you could wear for a month, when taken out each night. My eyes were yellow (the ball, not the iris) by the end of it. I didn't wear contacts again for at least 5 years (may have been closer to 10). Now I only wear daily disposables and throw them out each night when I wear them. Even then, I only wear them occasionally as I don't like wind on my eyeballs. Don't do it kids! Your eyes are too precious.

There is an alternative to both glasses and contact lenses: corrective laser surgery.

I had it done in 2010 and have not required glasses/lenses since then. My eye sight is better than 20/20 and all for the measly price of £1500, for one eye :)

Worse than that, have a horrendous crash at 35mph on your mountain bike, miles from anywhere, and your specs fly off your face when your crash helmet exploded hitting the ground. Took me and my buddy 1.5 hours to find my specs, still couldn't see that great when I put them back on! Then it was time for hospital...

Doesnt work for everyone though :( being short sighted is only half the problem I have with my eyes, they struggle pointing the same way, so I have to have corrective prisms, which can only be put in glasses! So I am glasses4lyf. I like them though so it's all good.

Yep, nothing like having a bug/stone/other debris hit you eye while going at speed... Ballistic eye protection with rx inserts Cheesecake!
For me the only downside of glasses is that they are not very compatible with gas masks.

True, though some adventures I looked forward to less than others; I was once in an Art lesson and was asked to go to the science department and ask to borrow a skull for us to draw ( still-life ). The lab technician I managed to find was less than enthusiastic about that idea and I had to go back empty handed...

Been hearing the rumours for a while; sad news to hear it confirmed. On a brighter note:
