Recently I've re-watched Porco Rosso, Howl's Moving Castle and The Castle in the Sky on Blu Ray, the colors blew me away! Now I'll sit with my sunglasses and patiently wait for the 4k version (⌐■_■)

Studio Ghibli was my introduction to anime with Princess Mononoke around 2000/01 in South Africa.
It and Blue Gender, which was also playing on satellite tv at the time, were what started my love for Japanese Animation.

I think the only ones from Ghibli I have yet to sit down to watch, despite owning a copy, are Kiki's, Poppy Hill and Spirited Away (and the new film Wind Rises).

(Still don't get why there was so much hate directed at Blue Gender, I thoroughly enjoyed it)

Hey, I'm with you, but if you're trying to bring a non anime-loving, non japanophile into anime, I'd start with the top list and see how many they would be willing to watch. I mean, if you aren't into anime after Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, or Princess Mononoke then it's just never going to happen.

    I didn't really like Kiki's I thought it was a bit standard.

spirited away is one of my favourites!

You can't tell someone to watch totoro and not to watch grave of the fireflies - they are basically the same story but polar opposites of one another - I think they were even made at the same time, certainly in the same year.

I agree that all should be watched :D I love pom poko, I find it hilarious. and the cat returns is genious too. Infact, I can find points of all the films I love. all those titles make me smile reading them.

Graves of the firefly is a great anime but it's also very depressing :-/ Watch something like 'Ooran High School Host Club' to counterbalance the distress feeling.

My big issue with Grave of Fireflies is the message I got from it. It seemed more, "assimilate yourself into society. No individualism," and less . . . idk . . . what do people see in this movie? What makes you like it so much?

Ouran High School Host Club is hilarious. I love that show. It's really clever.

Grave of the Fireflies is fantastic. It was so refreshing to see SG take such a change of pace, its incredibly moving but of course it has some Japanese culture at its heart but to be honest if any other country had 1, let alone 2, nuclear bobs dropped on it they would probably be banging on about it a lot too.

Go into it n the right frame of mind and let it rip your heart out, its even more emotional now I have children.

If you aren't into anime after watching those, you're basically dead inside.

I see it as just an account of a part of Japanese history. "Remember our heritage --the shameful parts as well as the good parts".

Studio Ghibli is not everything, merely the beginning.
Here's a list of some of my all time favorites:

    - Akira
    - Ghost In The Shell
    - Metropolis
    - Steamboy
    - Cowboy Bebop: Tengoku no tobira
    - Kara no Kyoukai (All 7 OVA)
    - Redline ( I took them 7 years to draw this movie.)

PS: Who said I like 'Grave of the firefly', great story, great animation but I never said I liked it XD

Is that how you got your eyepatch? :p

On a serious note, I can't imagine a tripping out 'gator would be fun for anyone involved...
