There is a very good reason he was here for so long, if you're going to deport someone you want to make sure the country you deport them to isn't going to torture them or use evidence from torture against them in court, so they had to wait for reinsurances that he wouldn't be mistreated by the US before he could be deported. Human rights are universal, they can't be taken away or you can't make exceptions. Then there is also the problems it would cause in regards to the EU, we would have to pull out of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Council of Europe, which requires all of its members to adhere to the European Convention on Human Rights.

Of which, Article 8 is a pesky barrier to the snooper's charter.

But why does it matter if his country is going to torture him? Why is it our problem?

I'm not sure if I'm playing devils advocate here or if I'm actually a believer of that feeling because of what the press have done to people like that in their kangaroo courts.

Because it's unethical to knowingly send someone to be tortured when that's one of the things a government says you shouldn't do.

Two wrongs don't make a right, and that? A bit like saying you can't tell someone not to murder and then murder them when they do - that's a double standard and is why the death penalty has a logical fallacy. But anyway that's major thread drift. But yeah, avoidance of a double standard, essentially. One could argue that these people threw away their rights by committing crimes but at the same time a government can't legitimise violent punishments.

Another human being would be put through some of the most extreme pain, both physically and psychologically, and you simply don't care?
    Are you a robot?

OK, you can close the thread now - I don't think it gets any more demotivational than that.

Apologies to all if this starts a flame war (Serious forum perhaps?) but in the case of people like Abu Hamza, whose only reason for living in this country is to plan attacks against us, then shipping them off to their own country is the best option in my opinion.

The fact that the Human Rights Act is used to keep people like that in this country only serves to show that the government don't really care about the innocent people that get killed or maimed in this attacks, or they'd have done something about it already.

Granted, it has been proved that torture doesn't really accomplish anything in the long term but, as was quoted earlier, why should it be our problem?

The benefit of debating in the demot thread is that we always have an excuse when it inevitably goes to **** :p

True, but when the debate doesn't go the way some people want it to, they throw their toys out of the pram and get all pissy. Then they get banned....

For full demote you have to remember that judging from last week's election results, the majority in England thinks that the government should be ok to send someone to be tortured abroad.

Nope, I just picked a confusingly inappropriate smiley :duh:

I was genuinely happy that you suggested serious, that sub needs more love and all the lengthy, heartfelt debates are currently happening in this - the least serious thread on the forum.

P.S. I've never banned a "proper" member on here, nor do I ever intend to :)

More than that, Guy Fawkes was more than likely a stooge and he was definitely tortured into his confession.
