Even more stupid. Florida Man only exists because all police records are public in Florida, in Texas they have Texas Man, they just cover for him.

@Mr_Mistoffelees - Like Florida, It depends on where you are. North of Houston's suburban sprawl, you start finding the face-tattoo/ methed out/ hole in the floor for the dog to get in -types. Yeah, there are a lot of idiots here, but they seem to be everywhere. Louisiana gave us a ton of them after Hurricane Katrina.
The special, "magic device in the bathroom is broke, come jiggle the handle for me," types, and the ones who have managed to live here 30 years and only know a handful of English... I probably shouldn't mention. :worried:

I can't give you a scale because I've never experienced Florida first hand, Thank God.

    Thought for the Day:

If your surname is Dicks and, you have a son, don't call him Richard...

You'll be delighted to learn that one of the overmen at the mine I worked was called Dick Willey.

Microsoft is claiming that the CloudStrike SNAFU is all the EU’s fault, ackshewally. The EU forced Microsoft to open up OS APIs to allow other security software vendors the opportunity to compete:

Well… yeah… no one’s disputing that ruling, it clearly exists.

But Microsoft didn’t have to go the route of exposing extremely low-level kernel interactions where bad code could hose the entire system. They could have exposed interfaces that have appropriate safeguards against bad code.

Microsoft also didn’t have to go the route of giving WHQL certification to a “boot-required” driver that’s basically an interface to allow external code to be dynamically injected into the kernel at runtime and then not certify or review the external code being injected.

Some serious “Some big boys broke it but they ran away” energy from Microsoft there.

I use a MacBook for work, and its default restrictions piss me off. “Oh you wanna share your screen in Teams? Nope, we’re blocking that unless you explicitly allow it.” “Excuse me, you’re trying to change how scrolling behaviour works for external mice? Nope, bugger off mate, not until you go click these buttons in Settings.” But at least I know where I stand with it. When something asks for privileged access, such as the third-party software Scroll Reverser*, I have to allow it access and it tells me which system functions it’s trying to access. If something asks for something unexpected I can say “Nah, you know what, I don’t know why this widget needs that access and I don’t trust it, I’m ditching that shite”.

Also: Reportedly, and I can’t find the link to where I read this, CrowdStrike also bypassed the “staged” deployment protocols that sysadmins had in place for CrowdStrike Falcon and pushed this update out to all systems. (Context: in managed environments, updates don’t have to be deployed to all systems at once. You can put your systems into tiered stages. e.g. Group 1 gets updates first; when we’re happy the updates worked on Group 1 machines, we allow it to go to Group 2; when we’re satisfied with Group 2, we roll it out to Group 3; and so on. CrowdStrike Falcon allows for this tiered approach and they reportedly bypassed it for the b0rked update.)

*If you use a MacBook and an external mouse, Scroll Reverser is a godsend. By default macOS doesn’t allow you to have different scrolling directions for trackpads and mice. “You want phone-style ‘natural scrolling’ on your very lovely trackpad that we spent so much time on and is very nice to use? Well now your mouse’s scroll wheel is backwards - tough titty, stop whining about it and go buy an Apple Mouse”. Scroll Reverser fixes that.

My childhood would have been a nightmare with a name like that… I mean… more than it already was… But by this point in my life I’d own it: I’d be encouraging everyone to call me “Dick”
