It should be obvious, but I’m compelled to point out that this is not a real thing: American schools are not being forced to put litter boxes in classrooms or bathrooms because of children who identify as cats.

What makes it even more depressing is the true origin of this conspiracy theory.

To save you a click… In the late 2010s, the Jefferson County Public School District in Colorado - the same school district where the Columbine Massacre took place - issued “go buckets”, containing emergency supplies, to schools. In case the Columbine context didn’t give it away, they were intended for use during school shooting lockdowns. They included first aid kits, water, sweets for diabetic children, torches, maps of the school… and a small amount of cat litter in lieu of a bathroom or toilet.

So… yes, schools did issue cat litter for use by kids, at least at one point. But the part that never gets talked about is that the cat litter would be used in situations where kids cannot get to the bathroom because they would be murdered by someone who is shooting everyone on sight with a (perfectly legal) pistol, rifle, etc.

There was an episode of the excellent “Things Fell Apart” podcast by Jon Ronson that mentions this story, but the whole series is well worth listening to.
