Isn't the aforementioned target market for said hats not already dense enough as it is?

The trick is to convince the lead balaclava brigade that the aliens are salt water soluble and the safest refuge is the sea.

Why not, build a city in the Mariana Trench? Keep the right-wing loonies well out of the way, until they wipe themselves out…

Noo... hopefully, what we end up with is a bunch of lead-capped corpses on the sea floor and a cleaner gene pool.

    https://www.techradar.com/vpn/vpn-privacy-security/uk-lords-propose-ban-on-vpns-for-children

    So.

You have a problem: you want to put a screw into a wall.

[You want to stop children from having easy access to adult-only content (not just porn) that they’re really too young for]

Solution: Pick up a hammer and start bashing the screw with it.

[Implement a poorly-designed piece of legislation that has massive privacy implications, is trivially bypassed, and pushes people to disreputable sources who don’t care about complying with the new law]

Unexpected outcome: the screw hasn’t gone into the wall and is now bent.

[Age gates are defeated with VPNs and Death Stranding 2’s photo mode]

Solution: Get a screwdriver and put it in properly. bigger hammer and keep trying the same thing but harder this time.

[Age-gate all the things! What’s that? It’ll create a secondary market of really dodgy VPN providers who don’t implement age gating, sell the traffic that comes through their service to scammers & advertisers, and stuff malware & spyware into people’s devices…? Hah! We’ll see how long that lasts when OFCOM can “enforces” the law by sending them mean letters!]

    :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

Not to mention the fact that it is trivial to spin up your own personal VPN. A couple of quid a month (even cheaper if you pay up front) for a cheap VPS, free open source software, et voilà: your very own personal VPN.

In fact that is exactly what I’m going to do if this ****-brained idea makes it through. Except this time it won’t just be the odd occasion that I use it, such as trying to click on a Reddit user’s profile only to be presented with age verification then finding out that the only reason the profile has been flagged as “NSFW” is because they’re transgender… it’ll be all my traffic.

Edit: removing spammy links from quote.

Now this is something I would be interested to follow.

I think a new thread would be in order. I'd bloody learn something as well as getting around this frustratingly and ridiculously ineffective late to the party clampdown on what was never supposed to be clamped down in the first place.

I'm up for it. Let me know.

Encountered this Mastodon post on El Reg this morning, and after Mozilla’s most recent doubling-down on “AI” enshittification, it has now carved a permanent space in my brain:

A year or two ago, a bunch of startups announced what at least one of 'em called "lifehouses:" little cylindrical prisons in which you could trap an anime waifu powered, of course, by ChatGPT and its ilk. Like, they were literally marketed as a waifu of your very own, permanently locked in a tube.

Well, apparently Razer thought that was a wizard idea... and has announced one of its own at CES. It's not leaning quite so heavily on the anime waifu side of things, though one of its main marketing images is embedded below for your edification... but it's decided the best partnership for powering the thing is Pedo Guy's Grok. Yes, the Grok that is currently getting dragged through the media for being absolutely rammed with people creating naked and sexual imagery of real people without their consent... and simulated child sexual abuse imagery.

(SFW clicks, they're only to Auntie Beeb, don't worry.)

(That's "Kira," apparently, "the loveliest gaming partner that's supportive, sharp, and always ready to level up with you." Uh-huh.)

Brave timing on that announcement, Razer. Let's see how that works out for you!

I saw this, funnily enough, on Kira's YouTube channel. He saw the funny side of sharing the same name as a tiny imprisoned digital waifu, created to sell every part of your life you care share with it.
    It beggars belief.
