I write the monthly newsletter for MyriadRF, the software defined radio community, and I had flagged a potentially-interesting project to write about: a WebGPU-accelerated propagation map thing. But when I dug into it, I found the... "developer" complaining that someone had taken his closed-source project, cloned it, added a bunch of features, and was calling it their own.

Theft! Calumny! But... wait, it was closed source, how did they steal it?

Well, they prompted an LLM and vibe-coded it of course. But the kicker: so did the original dev. And the real fun part: US case law says you can't copyright the output of an LLM, so the copier is legally in the clear.

I did rather enjoy the original guy's indignation, tho'. "How dare someone steal my stolen code!" Very shades of "we both had this rich neighbour called Xerox..."

Hard to see why anyone wants to spend so much on a calculator but, they all sold. I don't know if Casio calculators are still as long lasting as they used to be but, I have one of their scientific jobbys, that I bought when I was 18, 43 years ago and, it still works.

Because it’s not a calculator, it’s a piece of art

Considering the amount of work involved in lacquering each one by hand, I don’t actually think it’s terribly expensive.

Ain’t my cuppa tea, that’s for sure, but I can definitely see the appeal
