Windows NTFS.SYS corrupt or missing

    i get this error message. im guessing i have to reinstall windows huh?

    Can you access a recovery console? If so you should be able to attempt copying the original ntfs.sys file from the installation CD. Worth a try before doing a complete reinstall I would say.

    whats a recovery console? sorry im a newbie. i have winxp pro on the machine right now, but dont have the cd for it.

    however, winxp home will be here in 2 days.

    I've not got huge levels of experience with XP but as far as I know there's a recovery console, which is DOSlike and allows you to do some low level maintenance when the system isn't booting right. If you lack experience and an installation CD it's probably a good idea to contact a friend who show you exactly what needs doing.

    to get to the consol you need your xp disk. boot from the disk and watch the prompts. one if them is for the recovery consol. oh yea i have a good amount of dos expierence and i find that the consol cant do half the things you need. save your self the pain and reinstall.

    also check all yuopr ide connectiuons ide and power

    and also most other conenctions

    i get this sometimes

    and a quick pushign oif all the connectiosnm seems ot fix it


    also try makign sure your ram is settled ok

    turned out i had a bad stick of ram. i got windows reinstalled now. thansk for yall's effort to help:)

    i just was about to post ive had this prob on 3 different machines and it was bad ram

    so yea hope everythings runnin sweet now

    just coz the PC runs dont mean ur ram is bad im still runnin 1 of the 3 machines with the bodgey ram at the mo and it still runs and i only get the msg every 3-4 reboots / startups

    ive changed it with ram from my main machine and it dont do it so all i need is 60$ and i got me a stick of 512Kingston
