How about FAT32 to NTFS anyone know how to do that. My dad has a computer but all he uses it for is his excel sheets and data stuff like that. How would he be able to change his filesystem to NTFS or is it possible???

Try a program called partition magic 7, i believe it can convert HD partitions BUT you would most definatly lose all the stuff on ur HD.

thinkin about it.........wudn't it be easier just to format it by using a win98 startup disk.....Using fdisk to delete the NTFS, then creating a new dos partition, then formatting using format to a FAT32...

thanks for the suggestions, but none of those would have been any good as i needed the data intact, and partition magic didn't work for some reason.

in the end i have to load on xp move the data from the NTFS drive, format the Drive to FAT32 and then move the information back.

    thanks anyway

going from ntfs to fat32 would only give you one major plus.

its accessible in dos. so if your using the drive for major backups, and it knoks itself. you may stil have a backup of ur back up, if you get me.

other than that, fat32 - slightly faster maybe in a few things.

but ntfs overall is more stable.

fdisk will not always remove a NTFS partition.. the only two programs I know of that will convert NTFS to FAT is Partition Magic or System Commander.. (a very usefull tool)

As far as converting fat to NTFS, NT, 2000, and XP come with a conversion util..

Running NTFS on a local, single user PC is about pointless, and just creates troubleshooting headaches..

Partition magic can do it and it won't format the hard drive either. However don't try to convert the partition you os is running off of. I found that this doesn't seem to work. :D
